Wayne State University

COE and CLAS Collaborative Research Awards Incentive Program

The College of Engineering (COE) and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) are research-intensive units of the University. These two colleges have considerable breadth and depth of expertise across disciplines, and are well positioned to make an impact on the overall funding portfolio of the University. In alignment with initiatives to increase extramural research funding, our goals include: 1) increasing the number of principal investigators and encouraging new investigators to seek funding, 2) increasing the number and types of grant submissions, and 3) increasing the number of funded collaborative projects between colleges.

To enhance collaborative research activities between COE and CLAS, the following incentive program for multidisciplinary research awards will be implemented for a period of two years (for new grants funded from 10/01/15 – 09/30/17). The effectiveness of the program will be reviewed by May 1, 2017. This program will involve return of a percentage of the indirects from funded collaborative projects and training grants to the PIs.

Incentive:

  • When a joint proposal between COE and CLAS is funded, 40% of the Colleges' IDC and 10% of Departments’ IDC (at the discretion of the Chairs) from the grant will be put into the IDC accounts of the PI/co-PIs at the end of every fiscal year according to the IDC/Credit Split % of the award for the duration (including no-cost extensions) of the project.

Eligibility:

  • The PI of the award is a tenured or tenured-track faculty member from COE or CLAS.
  • The award involves at least one tenured or tenured-track faculty member from each college (COE and CLAS), serving as PI and co-PI, or multiple PIs.
  • The award has a total budget of more than $1.5 M with full indirect cost.
  • There is no cost matching from the Colleges.
  • The grant is competitively awarded after October 1, 2015.  Renewals are not eligible.

Collaborations with other colleges:

  • Similar incentives may be applied to collaborations between COE or CLAS and other colleges, but IDC returns for colleges other than COE and CLAS must be negotiated with the deans.

Requests for incentive funds:

  • PIs should make requests for the funds to the associate deans of research.
