Internal Funding Deadlines CalendarDates are listed for all programs that have announced their internal funding competition deadlines.  Updates will be issued as other program dates are announced.  OVPR funded programs require a proposal in the COEUS eProp system.  Coordinate with your administrative contact or Research Support Services for assistance with COEUS eProp.  If you would like to receive deadline date reminders, email CLASResearch@wayne.edu with the subject line "ADD ME TO INTERNAL FUNDING NOTIFICATION".

New Fringe Rates Effective 10/1/2015 - WSU annually updates its composite fringe benefit rates.  The new rates increased summer research to 12.7% and graduate research assistants to 18.5%.  For research projects funded under non-competing renewals, the award budgeted rates will be applied until the award is competitively renewed.  Proposals should use the newest DHHS rate agreement with an effective date of 6/2/2015 reflecting the new fringe rates.

Collaborative Research Awards Incentive Program  College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering have partnered in a collaborative research incentive program.  For jointly funded research between CLAS and COE faculty, 40% of each college's indirect return, and 10% of each collaborating department's indirect return will be reallocated to the PI's at the end of every fiscal year for new grants funded beginning 10/1/2015.  The program is a pilot that will be evaluated at fiscal year end 2017.

 


FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

American Association for the Advancement of Science.  The Science and Technology Fellowships program provides oppportunities for scientists to contribute to federal policy making while learning firsthand about the intersection of science and policy.  AAAS hosts a Chat With Fellows on Thursday, September 17, 2 p.m. to discuss the application requirementsAAAS Congressional Science & Engineering Fellows spend a year on Capitol Hill helping to research, develop and draft legislation and provide input to policy review and oversight.  Current year's fellowship application deadline is November 1, 2015.

National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, 15-581 S-STEM program is designed to increase the participation of institutions implementing evidence-based academic and student suppport in STEM disciplines.  FY16 funds will support Strand 1 institutional capacity building that predominantly supports scholarships or Strand 2 design and development activity of student retention and success.  Visit the NSF Division of Undergraduate Education webpage for resources, webinar links, and program official contact information.  NSF 15-581 Solicitation deadlines are September 22, 2015 and May 16, 2016. 

State Justice Institute Program grants support research of the state judicial system areas that are in special need of attention, have potential of national significance through development of models, and/or provides funding for technical assistance to facilitate adaptation of effective programs.  Funding is available up to $300,000; 50% match is required.  Current year's proposal deadline is November 1, 2015.

Department of Defense (DOD) Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) ONR-15-FOA-0011 funds research in highly diverse areas of interest to DOD component areas of army, navy, and air force research offices.  Proposed basic and fundamental research involving modeling and analysis of neural information processing, spin orbit coupling, media analytics for social structure/interaction, language use and cultural norms, energy flow, quantum many-body physics, ultra high thermal conductivity materials, dynamic formalism for cyber interaction, symbolic processing, and other diverse areas--is solicited.  DOD will award up to $1.25M annually to support a multidisciplinary research team.  White paper submittal date is September 8, 2015 (optional) with full proposal submission deadline of December 7, 2015.

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Research Grants support research that uses the knowledge and perspectives of the humanities and historical or philosophical methods to enhance understanding of science, technology, medicine, and the social sciences, archaeological projects that include the interpretation and communication of results (projects may encompass excavation, materials analysis, laboratory work, field reports, and preparation of interpretive monographs); and conferences.  NEH will award up to $100,000.  Current year's proposal deadline is December 9, 2015.

National Aeronautics and Space Adminstration (NASA) Research and Development Technology to Support Crew Health (Appendix A) supports research in health and performance countermeasures, knowledge, technologies, and tools to enable safe, reliable, and productive human space exploration.  Proposed research is sought in the areas of behavioral health and performance, bone, cardiovascular, immunology, muscle, nutrition, pharmacology, radiation, sensorimotor, advanced food technology, advanced environmental health, and space human factors.  NASA will award $100,000-$450,000 for one to five years.  The proposal submission window is open through September 3, 2016.

 


RESEARCH EDUCATION AND TRAINING

eCOI Training.  WSU has a new system of submitting, tracking, reviewing, approving research protocols, and for investigators to provide financial disclosures.  This session is specifically for the disclosure process.  Please bring your laptop.  Wednesday, September 9, 9:30-11 a.m. or Tuesday, September 22, 2015, 2-3:30 p.m., 87 E. Canfield, 2nd Floor.   

Fellowship and Grant Proposal Writing in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences This very successful workshop features Arthur Marotti, Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus.  During this session, Dr. Marotti will be providing feedback on participants’ voluntarily submitted draft proposals provided to all participants in advance of the session.  Friday, September 11, 2015, 1-3 p.m.  5057 Woodward, 6th Floor, Conference Room A.

Conversations on Commercialization/ SBIR/STTR Proposals.  Presented by SBIR expert, Andrea Johanson, this session will highlight where you'll need to think, plan and write differently to be successful with the NIH SBIR/STTR program.  Tuesday, September 15, 2015, 8:30-10 a.m.  5057 Woodward, 6th Floor, Conference Room A.

COS Pivot and WSU ResearchConnect.  COS Pivot is the most widely used searchable database of sponsor information containing more that 3,000 continually updated funding opportunities. ResearchConnect is a database that allows you to quickly connect with WSU colleague expertise.  Research Support Services located in 3222 FAB is available to assist you in use of Pivot on a walk-in basis.  The workshop is scheduled Tuesday, September 22, 2:30-4 p.m.  DAUGL, Lab A, First Floor.

Introduction to Private Foundations, a joint workshop hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Education.  The informational session will feature Foundation Relations on the topic of working with private foundation sponsors.  Tuesday, October 20, 2015, 12-1 pm.  College of Education, Room #10, Lower Level.
