Carl Levin to speak at Commencement;
Indian justice to get honorary degree

Sen. Carl Levin will deliver the keynote address at the Law School's Commencement on Monday, May 18. The university will award an honorary doctor of laws degree to Sujata Manohar, a former member of the Supreme Court of India.

Alumni Accomplishments

Joseph Barone, LL.M. '04, of Barone Law Offices PLC was appointed to the Wayne County Commission. He will represent Plymouth, Plymouth Township and Canton Township as the county's 10th District commissioner, replacing Shannon Price, who resigned earlier this month after being appointed the Plymouth Township supervisor. Barone will serve the remainder of her term, which expires at the end of 2016.

Joel Bowers, '07, was selected as a member of the Michiana Forty Under 40 Class of 2015, which honors the Michiana, Ind., area's young professionals for their contributions and accomplishments in the workplace and community. Bowers is a partner with Barnes & Thornburg LLP.

Michael Butler, '80, published a column, "Show me a sign," in the Detroit Legal News. The column shared his perspective on Michigan liability and auto negligence law. He is with Bernstein & Bernstein.

Meagan Drewyor, '14, joined Christensen Law.

Kevin Elsenheimer, '93, will serve as the new executive director of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

Marcy Ford, '93, managing partner at Trott Law, was named an honoree of the inaugural Career Mastered: Women's Leadership in Action Award, founded by Dr. Lisa Wicker of Linkwick & Associates, a human resources consulting firm.

Clint Gage, '95, was appointed practice group manager of Roetzel & Andress LPA's Business Services Group. Gage focuses his practice on corporate securities law, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, public and private securities offerings, corporate governance, '34 Act reporting and general corporate matters.

Thomas Guyer, '74, was honored by the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit during its annual Attorney Appreciation Awards. Guyer is a partner with Guyer Rose PLLC and a volunteer attorney with Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. who has prevented many evictions.

Judge Damon J. Keith, LL.M. '56, will receive an honorary degree May 9 from the University of Detroit Mercy. The university will award him an honorary doctor of humane letters during its undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremony. Keith has served as a U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals judge since 1977.

Peter Kellett, '82, Dykema's chairman and CEO, was elected to the Detroit Economic Club's board of directors.

Anna Maiuri, '92, was selected for the National Law Journal's inaugural list of 50 Energy & Environment Trailblazers. She was featured in the April issue. She is a member of Dickinson Wright PLLC.

Dan Ringo, '13, was promoted to operations vice president for Chicago with facilities management service SodexoMAGIC.

Shanika Owens and her first-year classmate Jasmine Moore are featured in a National Geographic article on Taking Back Detroit. They were photographed and interviewed at the Law School's Michigan Urban Farming Initiative Service Project during Orientation Week. Owens is quoted in a 30-second audio interview on the magazine's website.

Peter Hammer was part of an academic panel discussing policy during a symposium on the Detroit housing crisis at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Peter Henning was on a panel at the spring meeting of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association in San Francisco. The topic was "Obtaining and Negotiating Corporate Deferred and Non-Prosecution Agreements."

John Rothchild served as program chair and moderator for a panel discussion on "Losing Control: Who Owns Your Devices Now That They are Connected to the Internet?" presented by Cyberspace Law at the American Bar Association Business Law Section spring meeting in San Francisco.

Nick Schroeck lectured on "Great Lakes Law and Policy: Current Trends" to the faculty of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.

Robert Sedler spoke as part of a panel on U.S. federal courts in a program sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women Greater Detroit Chapter at the group's Southfield headquarters.

Nick Schroeck hosted a webinar about Lake Erie algae through the State Bar of Michigan Environmental Law Section. He co-chairs the section's Great Lakes and Inland Waters Committee.
