The W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a $1.3 million, three-year grant to launch the Detroit Equity Action Lab to bring together nonprofit organizations to address issues of structural racism in Detroit.

Some of the titans of American civil rights legal history gathered July 18 at Wayne Law to celebrate the donation of the personal papers of U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr.

The 11th annual Mark Weiss Day at Comerica Park on Aug. 1 raised more than $6,000 for scholarships at Wayne Law. 

Samuel Kokoszka, who will start his second year at Wayne Law this fall, has been awarded the Mark A. Miller Memorial Fund Scholarship.

Alumni Accomplishments

Robert Anderson, '05, (LL.M.), joined Kerr Russell in the Immigration Law Practice Group. He serves as chairman of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Liaison Committee for the Michigan Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Laura Brownfield, '95, joined the Trusts & Estates Practice Group of Plunkett Cooney. Brownfield, who is a member of the firm's Bloomfield Hills office, has extensive experience and expertise in the areas of estate planning, wealth management, real estate law and business law.    

Sandra Glazier, '82, received an Award of Appreciation from the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan for her presentation on "The Intersection of Probate and Family Law - Postmortem" at the 2014 Mid-Summer Seminar.

Peter Kellett, '82, was re-elected chairman and chief executive officer of Dykema for a second three-year term starting Jan. 1, 2015. 

Ashley Lipson, '78, (LL.M.), is the author of a new book, Courtroom Use and Misuse of Mathematics, Physics and Finance: Cases, Lessons and Materials, released by Carolina Academic Press. Lipson is a professor at the University of La Verne College of Law in California.

Kenneth Marcus, '84, a partner in the Health Care Practice Group of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, was named to this year's class of fellows for the State Bar of Michigan Health Care Law Section. The fellows program recognizes individuals who have made continual and outstanding contributions to the section and are generally considered as top health care attorneys in Michigan. Marcus was recognized for his contribution to the training of attorneys through his extensive speaking and writing on a variety of health law topics. He is nationally recognized for his work on hospital Medicare and Medicaid payment appeal issues for numerous hospitals in individual and group appeals before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board, the federal district courts and federal courts of appeal.

William Maze, '96, was elected president of Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, the largest statewide criminal defense attorney organization. The group hosts several criminal law educational opportunities each year, trains lawyers in advanced trial advocacy at its Trial Practice College and appears as Amicus Curiae in important precedent-setting cases before the Michigan Supreme Court. Maze is a criminal defense attorney with offices in Livonia, Royal Oak and Romulus.

Michael McCandlish, '10, joined Bejin VanOphem & Beineman PLC. He focuses his practice in intellectual property law.

Michael McCue, '98, is working on a Ph.D. at Michigan State University and is researching for his dissertation the experiences of law students and recent law school graduates with mental illness. He hopes his work will help promote conversation about mental illness and break down stigmas within the legal community.

Joseph McGill, '94 (LL.M), and 2001 (LL.M.), was elected to the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly. He is an attorney with Foley Baron Metzger & Juip PLLC.

Nancy Nawrocki, '86, one of fewer than 100 attorneys in the United States with an advanced master of laws degree in elder law, has changed the name of her Brighton-based firm to Nawrocki Center for Elder Law, Special Needs & Disability Planning PLLC.

Thomas Schehr, '97, was elected president of the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association for the 2014-15 year. He is the leader of Dykema's Financial Services Litigation Practice Group.

Kimberly Seibert, '11, and Robert Seibert, '80, co-wrote an article, Social Networking Sites and the Requirement of Authentication, published in the July 2014 Michigan Bar Journal.

Daniel Villaire Jr., '99, joined Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC. He concentrates his practice in employment law and litigation.
