SCOTUS decision on same-sex marriage draws cheers — and media to Wayne Law

Wayne State University Law School’s involvement in cutting-edge civil rights issues once again drew major media attention on June 26, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of a federal law that denied benefits to married same-sex couples. Wayne Law's Distinguished Professor of Law Robert Sedler talked to reporters about the Supreme Court ruling striking down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

Law School honored for diversity outreach

Ten American law schools were honored as finalists in the Law School Admission Council Inc.’s annual Diversity Matters Award, and among them was Wayne State University Law School — the only Michigan law school named. Felicia Thomas, director of enrollment and recruitment at Wayne Law, (standing second from the right), was on hand to receive the school’s recognition award as a top 10 finalist for the LSAC Diversity Matters Award.

Dean visits China to promote new LL.M. program

A growing number of students from China are expected to study at Wayne State University Law School in 2014 — a result of the school’s decision to offer a master’s degree in U.S. law and its vigorous outreach efforts to promote it. Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson was walking in Beijing during a visit to China to promote the new program, and was surprised to come across this poster advertising her talk at Tsinghua University Law School in China.

Lance Gable, associate professor of law at Wayne State University Law School and an internationally known expert on bioethics, has been named interim associate dean.

Dean introduces new program at Mackinac Policy Conference

Wayne Law Interim Dean Jocelyn Benson recently attended the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce Mackinac Policy Conference. She met with leaders in the Metro-Detroit business community to introduce Wayne Law’s new Program for Entrepreneurship and Business Law (PEBL).

Alumni Accomplishments

Jay Welford, '82, was awarded the distinguished President's Cup from the Commercial Law League of America. He is practice group coordinator for the insolvency and reorganization group at Southfield-based Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss PC, where he is a partner. Welford has more than 30 years of experience in corporate representation and restructuring. His practice encompasses multiple industry sectors, including banking, construction, manufacturing, logistics, servicing and leasing. Welford is also co-practice group coordinator for the franchise law practice group with a specific expertise in developing franchise systems. Throughout the years, Welford has received multiple legal honors and awards from Michigan Super Lawyer, Best Lawyers and DBusiness magazine. He is an active member in multiple business and legal associations, including the American Bar Association, American Bankruptcy Institute, Commercial Law League of America Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section and the International Franchise Association. He also serves as president of the nonprofit organization ALS of Michigan.

Brad Roth led discussions and gave presentations at three different events last month in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. He presented "Parsing 'Mutual Non-Recognition and Mutual Non-Denial': An International Law Perspective on Taipei's Current Framework for Cross-Strait Relations" at the 2013 International Law Association-American Society of International Asia-Pacific Reserach Forum; led a discussion on Taiwan's status in international law at a Taiwan Thinktank forum; and also gave a talk on his critcally acclaimed book, "Sovereign Equality and Moral Disagreement: Premises of a Pluralist International Legal Order" (Oxford University Press, 2011), at National Taiwan University, with Professor Timothy Webster from Case Western Reserve University School of Law as a discussant.
