Wayne Law News Alumnus Lawrence Mann’s generous donation will expand Advocacy at Wayne A $100,000 gift from Lawrence Mann, Wayne Law ’80, will support Advocacy at Wayne, a dynamic expansion of the Law School’s Student Trial Advocacy Program (STAP) founded in 1985.  Wayne Law’s first-time bar exam passage rate is highest in the state Ninety percent of Wayne State University Law School graduates who took the state bar exam for the first time in February passed — the highest passage rate of any law school in the state. Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson said she is encouraged by the high first-time passage rate, and is strongly committed to further improving the rate for all of the school’s graduates.  Professor goes public over pet coke concerns Wayne Law Professor Nick Schroeck, who is executive director of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center and a 2007 alumnus, joined U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (left), a 1989 Wayne Law graduate, and others to speak out during a May 28 press conference about potential public health and environmental hazards due to three-story-high petroleum coke mounds piled east and west of the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit.  Fellowships allow law students to serve public interest Fifteen students, including Kyle Peczynski (left), Ana Stutler and Eric Shovein, will get hands-on experience with the practice of public interest law this summer, with the support of the 2013 Public Interest Law Fellowships.  Ballgame fundraiser honors legacy of public interest attorney Ten years ago, friends of the late public interest attorney Mark Weiss, a 1969 alumnus of Wayne State University Law School, created a fundraiser to honor his legacy. For Michael Pitt, a “Super Lawyer” civil rights attorney, co-founder of Pitt McGehee Palmer Rivers & Golden, and a 1974 Wayne Law alumnus, the fundraiser is personal.  Benefit to honor Justice Marilyn Kelly, build public interest law scholarship A benefit to recognize and continue the public service legacy of former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly, now distinguished jurist in residence at Wayne State University Law School, will take place June 11 at the Roostertail in Detroit.  Students have more international opportunities than ever before The opportunity for law students, including Joshua Aprile (clockwise from top left), Yunjoo Goze, Adam Taylor and Karinne Marcolini, to work and study abroad has never been better at Wayne State University Law School, where the robust Program for International Legal Studies continues to expand and thrive.  Professor Linda Beale to chair ABA committee The new chair of an American Bar Association committee that sets and enforces ethical standards of conduct for tax lawyers will be Linda Beale, professor of law at Wayne State University Law School. | Upcoming EventsWayne Law Review symposium slated Alumni AccomplishmentsMelissa Graves, '02, was installed as president of the Women's Bar Association. She is an attorney with Collins Einhorn Farrell. Graves concentrates her practice on the defense of professional liability claims and has represented both attorneys and health care professionals. She also is involved in the defense of general liability matters. In the past year, Graves has been selected among the "Rising Stars" by Michigan Super Lawyers and as a Top Lawyer by DBusiness. Student AccomplishmentsJoseph Nunez was selected as one of two 2013 recipients of the Donald W. Banner Diversity Scholarship for law students given by Banner & Witcoff Ltd., a national intellectual property law firm. The scholarship program will provide Nunez, a rising second-year Wayne Law student who earned a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences from the University of California-Irvine and a doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with $5,000 for the upcoming fall semester of law school. The scholarship is open to all law students who are members of a minority group (including any group traditionally underrepresented in the field of intellectual property law) and who meet the following criteria: current enrollment in an American Bar Association-accredited law school in the U.S., commitment to the pursuit of a career in intellectual property law, strong communication and writing skills and demonstrated leadership qualities and community involvement.
