Valerie Newman, '92, was named as one of Lawyers USA's seven "Lawyers of the Year." Her work on the 2011 Lafler v. Cooper case, during which she arguing successfully before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the defendant, was cited. She convinced the court that the right to effective assistance of counsel includes not just effective representation at trial, but also effective advising regarding plea bargains. Newman is an assistant defender with the State Appellate Defender's Office.

Steven Helton and Zachary Van Horn have been selected to work as interns this summer in the London office of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, a multinational law firm with offices around the world. The third-year students will work in the firm's international arbitration group, which includes some of the world's foremost experts in the field.

Jocelyn Benson was a speaker Jan. 20 during an inaguration brunch hosted by Emily's List in Washington, D.C. Benson, who is interim dean of the Law School and was a candidate for Michigan Secretary of State in 2010, was joined by other speakers at the event including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Benson founded and is president of Military Spouses of Michigan. The group, by invitation, walked in the inaguration parade on Jan. 21.
