  Attorneys Dianna Collins (left) of Ypsilanti, Marcy Hahn of Birmingham and Caro, Stacey King of Huntington Woods and Royal Oak, Samantha Lord  of Port Huron and Mary Margaret O’Donnell of Royal Oak have joined together to create an endowed scholarship to help beginning law students at their alma mater, Wayne State University Law School, start their own career paths.  

Justice and human rights are far more than words for Wayne State University Law Professor Peter Hammer. The words represent the concepts that motivate his life.

 “The single most important purpose of the law is to do justice,” said Arthur Bryant, executive director of legal powerhouse Public Justice and the Public Justice Foundation. Bryant was the inaugural speaker for the Dean A. Robb Public Interest Lecture Series Oct. 16 at Wayne State University Law School.

Award-winning author Jules Lobel (left), president of the Center for Constitutional Rights and a law professor at the Pittsburgh School of Law, chats with third-year law students Michael Kiehn and Zoila Delcastillo.  Lobel presented a recent lecture, “Victory Without Success: Has the Guantanamo Litigation Led to Permanent Wartime Preventive Detention,” sponsored by the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School.

Alumni Accomplishments

  Nancy Edmunds, '76, was a recipient of the Guardian of Justice Award, given by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) Michigan Advisory Board to local judges whose work in upholding civil rights has been exemplary. Edmunds was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan bench on Feb. 10, 1992, by President George Bush. From 1978 until the time she took the bench, Edmunds practiced law in the Detroit law firm of Dykema Gossett. A partner since 1984, she was a member of the firm's commercial litigation section and had acquired extensive trial experience in both state and federal courts.

Ryan Schutte received an award from the Michigan State Bar Environmental Law Section for an essay he submitted in the Michigan Environmental Law Journal as a second-year student. His third-place finish is "especially impressive" because he was in competition with third-year students, said Christopher Dunsky, editor of the MELJ. "Ryan's work is superb, well deserved," said Wayne Law Associate Professor Noah Hall, who teaches Environmental Law. He was presented with the $500 award by Anna Maiuri, ELS chair.
