Peter Sugar, a 1970 Wayne Law alumnus, long-time adjunct faculty member and a member of Southfield-based Jaffe Raitt Heuer and Weiss PC, has been recognized with the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching.

First-year student Shawn Blanchard’s life story illustrates just how much one person’s actions can positively impact the lives of others. Blanchard spent the last five years as a high school math teacher at the Holcombe L. Rucker School of Community Research in the South Bronx Hunts Point neighborhood. While there, however, he did a lot more than just teach trigonometry.

Wayne Law's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights will welcome Georgetown University Law Center Professor David Cole on Thursday, September 29, for a lecture on civil rights in a post-September 11 world.

Nearly 50 Wayne Law Review students joined representatives from Wayne Law's Career Services Office for a bus tour of seven Detroit law firms on August 19. The event, which included stops at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, Dickinson Wright PLLC, Kerr Russell and Weber PLC, Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone PLC, Butzel Long, Dykema Gossett PLLC and Bodman PLC, was designed to introduce the newest members of the Law Review to the large law firms that will be recruiting on campus this fall.

Prominent New York City employment attorney Pearl Zuchlewski will deliver the 27th annual I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy on Tuesday, October 4. Zuchlewski’s lecture is titled “Electronic Discovery: The Creative Uses and Suspect Misuses of a Developing Litigation Device.”

Practical experience is an increasingly important component to a high quality, comprehensive legal education. In Metropolitan Detroit, where small businesses play a vital role in economic development and community revitalization, the impact of such practical experience can extend far beyond the classroom.

Students, faculty and staff members recently gathered for Wayne Law's annual Service Day on Thursday, August 18, 2011. The event took place at Belle Isle Park. More than 50 volunteers braved the rain to visit the Belle Isle Conservatory and clear brush and trim trees near the green house in preparation for new trees to be planted.

A special evening to celebrate the life and legacy of James K. Robinson will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18, at the Detroit Athletic Club.

The Damon J. Keith Law Collection of African American Legal History announced that the exhibit Marching Toward Justice: The History of the 14th Amendment will be featured in Wayne State University’s Community Arts Auditorium through October 20. The display coincides with the grand opening ceremony of the Keith Center on October 19.

The Wayne Law Alumni Association (LAA) will host a gathering for Lansing-area alumni from 5-8 p.m. on October 6 at Sir Pizza, 201 East Grand River, in the Old Town section of Lansing. The event will offer alumni the opportunity to meet and network with fellow Wayne Law attorneys, get Law School updates and give input on future alumni events in mid-Michigan.

Wayne A. Budd, '67, senior counsel with the Boston law firm Goodwin Procter LLP, has been named as a recipient of The American Lawyer's annual Lifetime Achievement Award. Budd joins a select group of attorneys who have received this distinction, awarded annually to individuals who demonstrate outstanding private sector success and a devotion to public service over the course of their careers. Min Jian Huang led the Disability Law Clinic in receiving a fully favorable decision in one of its cases. The case involved an eight-year-old boy with autism whose mother applied for children's SSI benefits on his behalf in March 2010. The Social Security Administration denied the application, and the child's mother then requested a hearing before an administrative law judge. Min Jian Huang represented the mother and child at the hearing. Min persuaded the judge that the child has marked limitations in the domains of acquiring and using information and interacting and relating to others, and therefore is disabled under Social Security's definition of disability for children. The child will receive past due SSI payments dating back to the month the application was filed, plus monthly SSI payments for the foreseeable future. Eligibility for SSI also means that the child will receive health insurance through Medicaid.

Peter Henning  was quoted on Capital FM News (Africa) in a story titled "Underwear bomber preps for U.S. trial." The young Nigerian accused of trying to blow up a packed transatlantic airliner over Detroit on Christmas 2009 in one of the most significant terror plots of the past decade heads to court Wednesday. The trial of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab - popularly known as the underwear bomber - will look into charges that he allegedly aimed to kill nearly 300 people aboard the Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit. "This is the American legal system on display for the world. That's important," said Henning. "The judge has to ensure this trial is conducted fairly without letting it dissolve into a circus. That's difficult to do because Mr. Abdulmutallab has his own agenda."
