An Evening at the Ballpark with Wayne Law

An Evening at the Ballpark with Wayne Law took place on Aug. 2, 2011. The event, hosted by the Wayne Law Career Services Office and sponsored by Varnum LLP, Dykema, Butzel Long, Jaffe Raitt Heuer and Weiss, Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, Young Basile Hanlon and MacFarlane PC, brought local Detroit law firms and rising 2L and 3L Wayne Law students together as a kick-off for the fall recruitment season. Mark your calendars for the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights Grand Opening Ceremony, Oct. 19

Judge Keith’s life has been dedicated to fighting for justice and opportunity. The Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, made possible through generous gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, will allow that work to continue at Wayne Law. Ground was broken for the building on May 17, 2010, and the grand opening celebration is scheduled for Oct.

Denise D’Allura joins Wayne Law as development director

Wayne Law is pleased to announce that Denise D’Allura has joined the WSU Division of Development and Alumni Affairs as development director of the Law School. Her responsibilities include leading the Law School development team and managing the Law School’s fundraising program.

Wayne Law participates in WSU Get Schooled Program

Community Engagement@Wayne expanded Get Schooled following the program's successful launch last year. This year's program began on July 17, 2011, and was designed to expose underrepresented student populations to higher education and career paths. Throughout the week-long program, 60 eighth-and ninth-grade students from metropolitan Detroit spent their time at Wayne State University. Students visited the Law School for class and conducted a mock trial spin-off of the Chris Brown/Rihanna domestic abuse case during the program.

Alumna committed to helping families, honored with President’s Volunteer Service Award

When May 2011 Wayne Law graduate Kimberly Grover’s son Glenn, a U.S. Marine, deployed to Iraq in 2007, she knew she couldn’t just sit back home and hope he was doing all right. She had to get involved.

Tamira Cason Chapman, '07, an associate in Miller Canfield's Detroit office, was honored by the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association with the prestigious Barrister of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to a member of the Barristers board who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the development and execution of Barristers' programming. At Miller Canfield, Chapman assists clients in securing and safeguarding their intellectual capital in the United States and abroad, including copyrights, trademarks, word marks, service marks, domain names and other related rights.

Kathleen Howard has been appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of a new DPS-authorized charter school, New Paradigm Glazer Academy Glazer. As a member, she will help set policy, maintain the academy's vision and  promote educational excellence. She will also help manage school resources, ensure effective organizational planning, support and review the performance of the school leader and education service provider and maintain accountability. Steven Winter served as a presenter at the University College London's 2011 Current Legal Issues Colloquium on Law and Language in London on July 5, 2011. He participated in the "Final Thoughts" panel, presenting a paper titled "Frame Semantics and the ‘Internal Point of View,'" which uses the frame semantics of Charles Fillmore and the more recent work of Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner on conceptual blending to critique the standard jurisprudential perspectives of H.L.A. Hart and Ronald Dworkin.
