Wayne Law News A special message for our alumni This year’s edition of Michigan Super Lawyers magazine is now available, and once again Wayne Law alumni top the list. Three hundred and seventy-nine of this year’s Super Lawyers are graduates of Wayne Law.  Wayne Law graduates secure first-time passage rate of 91 percent on July 2010 Michigan bar exam Official passage rates for first-time takers of the July 2010 Michigan bar exam have been released, and Wayne Law graduates once again passed at a rate significantly higher than the statewide average. Wayne Law first-time takers secured a 91 percent passing rate, 9 percent higher than the statewide average of 82 percent for first-time takers.  A. Alfred Taubman issues $200,000 challenge grant, creates endowed chair in Keith Center Industrialist and philanthropist A. Alfred Taubman has issued a $200,000 challenge grant to complete the funding required for the construction of Wayne Law's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. Taubman will match each new gift received by July 2011 for the construction of the Keith Center, up to a total of $200,000.  William H. Goodman to deliver I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy, Nov. 10 Prominent Detroit civil liberties lawyer and Wayne Law adjunct faculty member William H. Goodman will deliver the 26th annual I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy at 6:30 p.m.  Professor Paul R. Dubinsky appointed director of Wayne Law LL.M. program Wayne Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Paul R. Dubinsky as director of graduate studies. As director, Dubinsky is responsible for overseeing a significant resource for practicing lawyers in Michigan – a program that provides advanced study in three popular fields of specialization: corporate and finance law, labor and employment law, and taxation. He will also continue teaching courses in international and comparative law, his areas of scholarly specialization.  Wayne Law Career Services Office responds to economic reality In this time of economic challenge, the Wayne Law Career Services Office (CSO) is increasing its efforts to reach out to employers and develop new programs to help students and alumni identify their ideal career path and launch a successful job search.  Alumni Outreach Fall 2010 As part of an effort to reach out more broadly to Wayne Law alumni, the Law School and the Law Alumni Association (LAA) have organized a number of events over the last few months, both in Michigan and beyond.  Four Wayne Law alumnae honored as 2010 Women in the Law Four Wayne Law alumnae were recently honored by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as 2010 Women in the Law. Julia Donovan Darlow, ’71, University of Michigan; Elizabeth P. Hardy, ’84, Kienbaum Opperwall Hardy and Pelton PLC; Shirley Kaigler, LLM ’93, Jaffe Raitt Heuer and Weiss PC; and Noreen L. Slank, ’80, Collins Einhorn Farrell and Ulanoff PC, were honored at the inaugural Women in the Law luncheon in September.  Save the date for Treasure of Detroit The 14th annual Treasure of Detroit Gala will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Detroit Institute of Arts. More information to follow. Wayne Law alumni named Litigation Stars and Future Stars by Benchmark Litigation Benchmark Litigation, a guide to America’s leading firms and attorneys, recently announced its 2010 Litigation Stars and Future Stars. Eleven of its 36 Local Litigation Stars for Michigan and five of the 12 Future Stars are Wayne Law alumni.  SBG Mentorship Program helps first-year law students It isn’t easy to obtain a law degree. It’s challenging to balance classes, studies, work, on-campus involvement and a personal life. Throw in some competition with your peers and it can be downright daunting. Fortunately, students and alumni have long lauded Wayne Law's friendly and supportive environment.  Donald E. Barris Trial Competition results The Wayne Law Student Trial Advocacy Program (STAP) held the final round of the Donald E. Barris Trial Competition Oct. 30 in the Law School’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium.  Supreme Court case is inspiration for Wayne Law sculpture Many Wayne Law students have looked up at the bronze relief sculpture in the hallway of the classroom building and pondered its meaning, but few know that its inspiration was an important Supreme Court case from the 1960s. Dot-com start leads to law school Wayne State University Law School second-year student Yosef Abraham didn’t always want to go to law school. In fact, there was a time in his life when he wasn’t even going to finish college, leaving school to seek his fortune in the dot-com boom more than 10 years ago. But after several years in that industry, he realized he needed an undergraduate degree to advance professionally. He obtained a bachelor of arts in Spanish from Georgia State University and then took a job selling legal services and performing administrative duties for an Atlanta-based law firm – and the rest is history.  Wayne Law students attend Law Student Division State Bar Annual Meeting Members of the Wayne Law Student Board of Governors (SBG) Executive Board, along with representatives of the Wayne Law ABA Student Division and Dicta, headed to Lansing Sept. 24 to attend the annual Law Student Division State Bar Annual Meeting. They were given a tour of the Michigan Supreme Court and visited with Justice Michael F. Cavanagh, who showed the students around his office and meeting rooms.
