Wayne Law announced that three outstanding individuals will join its faculty at the start of the 2010-11 academic year. They are Assistant Professor Brandon Hofmeister, Assistant Professor Justin Long and Assistant Professor Eric Zacks.

The Wayne State University Board of Governors and President Jay Noren welcomed Keynote Speaker The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Attorney General of the United States, to campus for the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights on May 17, 2010. Commencement photos online

Fifteen LLM degrees and 144 JD degrees were awarded at the Law School’s 83rd Commencement, held on May 17, 2010, at Orchestra Hall. Legal Adviser to the United States Department of State Harold Hongju Koh gave the commencement address and Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court Marilyn Kelly, ’71, was recognized as a 2010 WSU Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Koh was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

Wayne Law announces 2010 recipients of Public Interest Law Fellowships

Wayne Law announced the 2010 Public Interest Law Fellowship (PILF) recipients. Eric Berg, Adam Clements, Bradley Dembs, Anupama Gokarn, Andrew Hoff, Phyllis Jeden, Jeffrey Kerby, Elizabeth Kruman, Natalia Santanna, Aisa Villarosa and Chelsea Zuzindlak are gaining practical legal experience this summer through $4,800 fellowships that allow them to work for a variety of agencies and clinics in Michigan and Washington, D.C.

The Wayne Law Review held its annual banquet on May 14, 2010. Michael F. Gadola, Michigan Supreme Court counsel and general counsel to the State Court Administrative Office, was awarded the Richard J. Barber Alumni Achievement Award.

Wayne Law's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights will host its Biennial Lecture on Saturday, October 30, 2010. The Biennial Lecture was created to inspire people to take a closer look at issues related to civil rights and race relations. The keynote speaker will be announced shortly.

Edward M. Zelenak, '77, was selected by the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners as the recipient of the 2010 State Bar Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Servant Award. The award will be presented to Zelenak on Sept. 29, 2010, at the State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting Awards Banquet.

Student Accomplishments

Kimberly M. Adams was selected as a Just The Beginning Foundation (JTBF) Summer Judicial Externship Fellow. She will be externing with The Hon. Walter H. Rice, U.S. District Court-Southern District of Ohio (Dayton, Ohio) for eight weeks from June 1 through July 20, 2010. The JTBF is a multiracial, non-profit organization dedicated to developing and nurturing interest in the law among young persons of various ethnic backgrounds underrepresented in the legal profession and supporting their continued advancement. The specific objective of the Judicial Externship Program is to match selected law students with federal and state judges and to sharpen their skills in legal research, writing and analytical techniques.
