A special message from Dean Robert M. Ackerman

These are challenging times for the legal profession. As practicing lawyers adjust to changes in the economy, those of us in legal academia must be no less responsive to the evolving marketplace. As I watch the Red Wings on television, I cannot help but recall Wayne Gretzky’s admonition not to skate to where the puck is, but to where the puck is going to be. At Wayne Law, we have no crystal ball to tell us where the puck is going to be.

2010 Treasure of Detroit to be held March 27 at the Detroit Institute of Arts

This year's honorees include former Wayne Law Professor Lawrence Mann, '80, former Wayne Law Dean and Professor Joan Mahoney, '75, and Dean Robb, '49, a longtime activist and civil rights attorney. Alumni Reunion Reception and Silent Auction kick off the event at 5:30 p.m. Awards program and dancing following dinner.

Wayne Law student Nadia Igram places first in State Bar of Michigan Competition

Wayne Law congratulates first-year student Nadia Igram on her recent first-place finish at the State Bar of Michigan Law Student Section 1L Oral Advocacy Competition. Igram achieved the highest cumulative score over four rounds of competition, placing above 59 competitors from other area law schools.

Wayne Law Announces New Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic

Wayne Law announced the addition of a new law clinic aimed at providing students with practical experience and serving the greater community. The Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic, led by Assistant Professor (Clinical) Rachel Settlage, was offered this semester.

Wayne Law student research group receives award for work on Michigan Green Enterprise Zone Initiative

Four Wayne Law students received the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) Institute’s Distinguished Young Leaders Award for their work in helping to design a Green Enterprise Zone for the Detroit region. Students Kevin Kelly, Erika Monfette, Samantha Orvis and Julianna Rivera were presented with the award at the ESD Affiliate Council Gold Awards Banquet on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, Mich.

Wayne Law Alumnus Utilizes Knowledge Gained from Legal Education, Professional Work Experience in New Post as Mayor of Traverse City

Chris Bzdok, a 1996 Wayne Law graduate, understands how to collaborate with government officials to implement change. As a successful environmental attorney and resident of Traverse City, Mich., he’s been doing so for more than a decade. Now in his new role as Traverse City mayor, he hopes to use the knowledge gained from his legal education, professional work experience and his role as a community member to improve the way business is done in the City.

Wayne Law Alumna Navigates Winding Road, Finds Rewarding Career in Immigration Law

To say that Patricia Ice took the long way to arrive at her career as an immigration attorney is a bit of an understatement. But certainly all her varied academic and professional experiences were pointing her toward a career helping people from other cultures. She has worked across the country and around the world from Las Vegas to northern Michigan and from Africa to the Caribbean.

Wayne Law student groups raise more than $1,400 to support Haiti relief efforts

Seventeen Wayne Law student groups recently joined forces in an event to raise funds for Haiti relief efforts. The coalition raised more than $1,400 through a bake sale held in the Law School Classroom Building.

Faculty Accomplishments

Professor of Law Michael McIntyre was named senior advisor to the Tax Justice Network. The TJN, headquartered in the UK, is a leading advocate of international tax reform, with an emphasis on tax policies benefitting the developing countries. It has been especially active on curtailing international tax evasion through an effective exchange of information and has promoted, with the UN and elsewhere, the model information exchange agreement prepared by Professor McIntyre.
