Alumni Accomplishments

Achla Karnani, '03, has been named as a principal at Moran, Raimi, Goethel and Karnani, PC. Karnani concentrates her practice in the area of family law. She was named a Rising Star by Michigan Super Lawyers Magazine (2008) and was the first recipient of the Washtenaw County Bar's Pre-eminent Young Lawyer Award (2005). She has completed the ICLE Family Law Certificate Program, as well as served as co-chair of the WCBA Family Law Section for two years, as the Friend of the Court liaison for the WCBA for a year and on the board of the Washtenaw County Chapter of the Women Lawyers' Association of Michigan.

Associate Professor of Law Julia Qin attended the second annual meeting of the Asian Society of International Law and the inaugural conference of the Asian International Economic Law Network, held at the University of Tokyo, Japan, in early August, and presented a paper on "Managing Conflicts Arising from WTO and RTA Rulings."

Professor of Law Peter Henning commented in a Wall Street Journal story about the SEC's curtailment of so-called "tolling agreements." Under such agreements, the SEC and respondents both agree to suspend the statute of limitations while they try to resolve a civil or administrative action. Henning noted that use of the agreement had increased in recent years, partly due to bureaucratic delays of the agency.
