Stephen Ross, Dan Gilbert donate largest gifts in Wayne Law history

Real estate developers, professional sports team owners and alumni Stephen M. Ross, '65, and Dan Gilbert, '87, announced their intentions to donate $5 million each to Wayne Law, for a joint gift of $10 million. Both gifts represent the largest donations in the Law School’s history. The funds will support the Law School’s ongoing efforts to elevate its national reputation and attract talented students from across the country to study at Wayne Law and live in Detroit.

Wayne Law honored the inaugural members of the Miller Family Wayne Law Alumni Wall of Fame during an induction ceremony Monday, Sept. 12, at the Law School. Speaking at the event were Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson, WSU President M. Roy Wilson; E. Powell Miller, '86, whose gift to the Law School made the wall of fame possible; and Judge Edward Ewell, '85, chair of the wall of fame selection committee.

Deadline for 2017 nominations for alumni wall of fame is Oct. 31  

The purpose of the Miller Family Wayne Law Alumni Wall of Fame Award is to acknowledge graduates and former faculty and staff of Wayne Law whose extraordinary professional success and contributions, profound positive influence on Wayne Law, and high degree of character and integrity are recognized by their peers. The Miller Family Wayne Law Alumni Wall of Fame Award is the highest award presented by Wayne Law. Nominations for 2017 inductees are due by Monday, Oct. 31. Dean Jocelyn Benson steps down to lead national campaign in sports for equality Dean Jocelyn Benson steps down to lead national campaign in sports for equality  

Jocelyn Benson stepped down as Wayne Law dean in September to serve as CEO of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, a venture led by professional sports organizations, including the NFL, NBA and MLB, to improve race relations in America. She also will serve as a special advisor on philanthropic investments to RISE founder Stephen M. Ross, '65. Benson will continue her affiliation with Wayne Law as director of the Levin Center at Wayne Law and co-teaching a course on Legislative Oversight with former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin.

to lead Law School
 

Lance Gable, associate dean of Wayne Law and an internationally known expert on public health law and bioethics, will serve as the Law School’s interim dean. Gable, a member of the Law School faculty since 2006, was named associate dean in June 2014, after serving as interim associate dean since June 2013. Associate Professor Susan Cancelosi has been appointed interim associate dean at Wayne Law. In her new role, Cancelosi, who joined the Wayne Law faculty in 2006, will work with faculty and staff to oversee the Law School’s academic programs.

Wayne Law honored first-year, upper-class and alumni Damon J. Keith scholars at a reception Thursday, Sept. 15. Many of the 41 past and current Keith scholars attended the event in the Law School's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. Among speakers at the event was Keith, LL.M. '56.

Oday Salim back to Michigan
 

Oday Salim uses his law degree to protect the environment. Salim, '08, recently left his job as a senior attorney with Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services in Pittsburgh to return to Michigan, where he grew up. Salim serves as senior attorney with the Detroit-based Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, where he was a board member before taking his new post.

Wayne Law alumni gathered for a reception Thursday, Sept, 22, during the State Bar of Michigan Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids. Alumni honored this year by the state bar are Leo Goddeyne, '77, senior counsel with Miller Canfield, with the John W. Cummiskey Pro Bono Award; and Judge Nanci Grant, '89, chief judge of Oakland County Circuit Court, and Roland Hwang, '80, LL.M. '84, assistant attorney general for Michigan, both with the Champion of Justice Award.

Alice Jennings awarded for civil rights work

Alice Jennings awarded for civil rights work

 

Alice Jennings, '78, received the Peter Hammer Award from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Michigan Regional Office for her decades of work in civil rights. Jennings is founder of Edwards & Jennings PC, which specializes in civil rights and employment law. The award is named for Professor Peter Hammer, director of Wayne Law's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.

Suite named at Pentagon in honor of Carl Levin

 

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter honored former U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and John Warner by dedicating the Levin-Warner Legislative Affairs Suite in the Pentagon. Levin today is chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law and the Law School's distinguished legislator in residence. Michigan's longest-serving U.S. senator, Levin served in the Senate for 36 years, including as a member and nine-year chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Distinguished Professor Robert A. Sedler wrote a column, This election season, don't panic about Supreme Court, for the Detroit Free Press and was quoted by the newspaper in its report, Detroit school lawsuit: Does U.S. Constitution guarantee literacy? He also was quoted by The Detroit News for its report, Schuette takes straight-ticket fight to Supreme Court. These instances are among the numerous times he was quoted by news media this month.

Peter Henning interviewed by number of media outlets on variety of business topics

 

Professor Peter J. Henning was interviewed by a number of media outlets recently. Among those was a report, Crooked execs could face jail time, in Automotive News. He also made several guest appearances on Bloomberg Law, including segments about trader spoofing, the Glass-Steagall Act and Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf being questioned by the Senate Banking Committee. He was quoted many other times this month by news media.

Professor John E. Mogk was quoted by The Bond Buyer for a report, Michigan Cities' Suit Says State Shortchanged Them on Aid. He also was interviewed by WDET for its report, Lawsuit claims state shorting locals by billions; by the Detroit Free Press for its report, 14 cities sue Michigan, say revenue-sharing math isn't right; and by the Detroit News for its report, Taxpayer group sues Michigan, says it owes cities millions.  A number of other media interviewed Mogk for reports on the same topic.
