To the School of Medicine Family:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences Margit Chadwell, M.D., F.A.A.F.P., as associate dean of Student Affairs and Career Development, effective immediately. Dr. Chadwell replaces Lisa MacLean, M.D., who resigned to take a position with Henry Ford Health System in February.

The director of the Year III Family Medicine and Continuity Clinic Clerkships over the last seven years, Dr. Chadwell also oversees the Year IV Family Medicine Sub-Internships and all departmental electives. Since first joining our School of Medicine as a voluntary faculty member in 1999, her continuous teaching responsibilities have included small-group instruction in the Clinical Medicine I and II courses, Family Medicine and Continuity Clinic clerkship precepting, and the Physical Diagnosis course. She has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, and was recently nominated for the Excellence in Clinical Teaching Faculty Award.

After graduating from our School of Medicine in 1994, Dr. Chadwell completed a Family Medicine internship in 1995 and a Family Medicine residency in 1997 at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, where she was named chief resident (1996-1997). She served as assistant director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Oakwood Hospital (1997-2001), and as associate and interim director of the program at Oakwood Annapolis Hospital (2002-2010).

Dr. Chadwell serves as the faculty advisor for the Family Medicine Interest Group, the Robert R. Frank Student-Run Free Clinic, and the Christian Medical and Dental Association, and is a faculty member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. In 2011, she was recognized with the WSU Campus Life Leadership Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award. The School of Medicine’s Gold Humanism Honor Society presented her with the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2012.

Her research and scholarly focus is on undergraduate medical education. She is co-investigator for the Bridges to Equity $1.37 million grant integrating public health concepts in the medical school curriculum and developing the M.D./M.P.H. dual degree program at WSU. She is an elected member of the university faculty senate and serves on the WSU Student Affairs Committee. Dr. Chadwell is the medical director of the Robert R. Frank Student-Run Free Clinic and provides medical student advising and mentorship throughout all years of training. Her strong commitment to promoting professional development will serve her – and our students – well in her new position.
