Study of how virus overcomes body's defenses may lead to "New era for antiviral drug design"

Study of how virus overcomes body's defenses may lead to "New era for antiviral drug design"

For such simple things – just tiny packages of genetic material – viruses are amazingly effective at getting past the human body’s quite extraordinary defense system and infecting cells. In addition, viruses can also mutate very quickly, which makes them difficult targets for even the most advanced virus-fighting drugs.

Small animals, big questions

With hundreds of thousands of different species, insects are by far the most diverse group of animals on the planet. Beyond their stunning number, insects offer something much more. Over the past few years, a WSU research group has used them to provide a window into the amazing variation that exists between species and even between insects of the same species, and also to shed light on evolution itself.

We are what we taste and smell. Linking sensory perception to health in the Alcedo laboratory

Everybody knows that the environment affects our health. The ability to sense changes in the environment is an important part of this. For example, people unable to taste or smell properly are predisposed to infections and diseases, including obesity, heart disease, and depression. But how do our senses promote good health?

Nikhil Yedulla applies synthetic biology to a new microorganism Nikhil Yedulla applies synthetic biology to a new microorganism

Many undergraduate students look for research opportunities at Wayne State laboratories and a few venture further afield. Nikhil Yedulla, a fourth year Biology major, had an amazing opportunity to work in the laboratory of Dr. George Church, the renowned geneticist and National Academy of Sciences member, at Harvard University.

In the community

Growing community in the classroom Growing community in the classroom

Everyone knows that the best way to learn something is to teach it. But conventional educational practices provide few opportunities for undergraduates to teach. Biological Sciences faculty Dr. Karen Myhr is leading an innovative program that provides teaching opportunities for undergraduates by engaging them as peer mentors.

Growing scientists at STEM day

On a chilly March morning, school buses from over 15 local school districts converged on Wayne State University. They were loaded with middle school students and teachers arriving for the second annual STEM Day. Initiated in 2017, STEM Day doubled in size to over 2,000 students in 2018!

The cultural hub of Detroit heats up The cultural hub of Detroit heats up

Wayne State University is the heart of Midtown Detroit, a diverse community of roughly 50,000 residents. Both the campus and surrounding neighborhoods have changed a lot over the last decade. An award-winning renovation of a vacant car dealership created the Integrative Biosciences (IBio) Center. The IBio Center provides sleek new research space for investigators at Wayne State University, including Biological Sciences, and from the private sector.

Putting the "green" in green and gold

Biodiversity is blooming in a greenhouse on the top of Science Hall. This sunny space is packed with native plant seedlings that are adapted to Michigan’s soil and climate. These plants are now featured in demonstration gardens all over campus.
