The School of Social Work welcomes four new faculty experts to Detroit’s research, scholarship and teaching powerhouse

We proud to welcome four new faculty members - Kess Ballentine, Luisa Kcomt, Lisa Panisch, and Bryan Victor - working to reduce the hidden punishments of lower-income family labor wins, advance health and wellness for sexual and gender diverse and racial/ethnic minority populations, transform intergenerational family cycles of trauma, and improve child welfare practices.

In 2021, Social Work welcomed two new postdoctoral trainees, Killian Kinney and Bakari Wallace. Kinney and Wallace join existing trainees Allison Laskey and Guijin Lee, who work closely with faculty mentors to develop their professional and academic skills.

A new data landscape report released provides a comprehensive snapshot of Michigan’s criminal legal system for adults and youth. When our state and local public safety institutions cannot speak to each other or to the public, individuals are further marginalized and fall through the cracks—missing data is missing people.

Naloxone vending machines make life-saving medication easily available in Michigan jails and communities.  

The CBHJ partnered with Shaffer Distributing based in Livonia, Michigan to purchase fifteen vending machines and customize the coils to hold up to 150 naloxone kits. Machines have been installed in jails across the state and provide this free life-saving medication to the public.

Social Work explores new assessment methods to enhance undergraduate student learning  

With funding support from a Wayne State 2021 Program Assessment Grant, a group of Social Work faculty and staff have come together to ensure Warrior graduates are prepared to complete the classroom to community transition before walking across the graduation stage.

Continuing Education debuts new Ableism in Social Work online course  

In this one-credit online session, Kathryn Wright suggests ways that social workers can work in solidarity with people with disabilities, including ideas for how to make your practice accessible and welcoming to people with disabilities.

The Impact of Community Mental Health on Michigan’s Jails  

Using interviews and data from county- and state-level databases, and across multiple evaluation projects, the Center for Behavioral Health and Justice found that CMHs have significant and positive impacts on individuals with serious mental illness who have been in jail.
