Wayne State launches DetroitEd411 service to help connect, engage community around post-secondary education
Wayne State University has launched a new public information service — called DetroitEd411 — to provide the community with free, 24/7 access to resources about post-secondary education opportunities via Facebook Messenger. DetroitEd411 seeks to empower the community and strengthen the city’s workforce by providing guidance and resources addressing all tracks of education, including vocational training, GED opportunities, community colleges and traditional four-year institutions.

Match Day filled with jubilation, 'happy tears'
Match Day for the School of Medicine Class of 2019 was the penultimate celebration for nearly 300 physicians in training who will graduate in June. Of the entire class, 98.16 percent matched with a residency program for which they interviewed. Warriors will fill residency slots in 26 different specialties, the top three being internal medicine, family medicine and emergency medicine.

Missing Student Protocol: When and why it’s implemented
It does not happen often, but when a Warrior goes missing, Wayne State takes it seriously. Recently, on two separate occasions, students were reported to the university as missing. University officials wasted no time implementing the Missing Student Protocol. Through broadcast messaging sent to mobile phones and emails, posting on the homepage, and sharing through social media, Wayne State quickly got the word out that one of its own may have been in trouble. In both instances, information flooded in that led to the almost immediate and successful location of the missing students.

STEAM Challenge winners announced
The winners of the Wayne State University STEAM Challenge — a pitch competition where interdisciplinary student groups come together to bridge STEM disciplines with the arts, humanities and social sciences — have been announced. While officials initially planned to award $10,000 to the top winner, $3,000 for the second-place winner and $1,000 for the third-place winner, WSU Provost Keith Whitfield surprised all attendees by adding another $5,000 award, allowing four teams to take home prize money to help turn their ideas into reality.

Tonya Matthews joins Wayne State as associate provost
Tonya Matthews has been hired by Wayne State University as its new associate provost for inclusive workforce development and director of STEM learning innovation. Matthews most recently served as the inaugural president and CEO of the Michigan Science Center, transforming the former Detroit Science Center into the region’s hands-on STEM learning destination. Her broad educational background spans engineering, arts, social sciences and physical sciences. She is also the founder of The STEMinista Project, an initiative designed to inspire and support middle school girls in STEM learning and careers.
