Wayne State University School of Medicine has been selected as one of three finalists this year for the Association of American Medical Colleges’ annual Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service. This prestigious award recognizes community service as an important element of the academic mission, and singles out institutions that serve as examples of social responsiveness for academic medical communities. Schools that receive the award must demonstrate a broad-based, continuing commitment to community service in a variety of programs and initiatives. Click here to read more.

Two hundred and seventy-one men and women earned the title of doctor on June 6 at the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s commencement and hooding ceremony, held at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Dr. Jacquelyn and Mr. Rick Watson have established a second endowed scholarship at the Wayne State University School of Medicine to help lighten the financial burden of medical students. “The WSU School of Medicine has been the catalyst of my career in medicine as a Radiation Oncologist,” said Class of 1983 alumna Dr. Jacquelyn R. The Wayne State University Medical Alumni Association recognizes distinguished alumni and faculty for significant contributions to the School of Medicine and the medical community at large. Awards are presented annually during the Medical Alumni Reunion Dinner. All School of Medicine alumni, faculty, resident alumni and students are invited to nominate candidates for the Recent Alumni Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Lawrence M. Weiner Award. Medical Alumni Annual Fund has National Impact

Sixteen students from the Wayne State University School of Medicine represented the university at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association Medical Student Section, held June 8-10 in Chicago, where more than 600 students from across the country met to discuss and vote on 50 student-authored policies. Wayne students were responsible for two successful policies at the meeting. The policies, adopted by the AMA Medical Student Section, were meant to guide elected student delegates in the physicians’ House of Delegates meeting held June 10-14. Read more. The Medical Alumni Annual Fund provides critical financial support to more than 60 student organizations at the School of Medicine, including the AMA.  There is still time to show your support before the fiscal year ends September 30.  Make a Gift Today!

Medical volunteers needed for WSU cycling event

On Aug. 19, Wayne State University will host The Baroudeur, an annual cycling event to raise money for student scholarships. The Baroudeur is a fun, noncompetitive event that gives riders of all abilities an opportunity to explore the Motor City and surrounding area on two wheels while helping economically disadvantaged students pursue higher education. Dr. Spitz, professor of Pathology at WSU of Medicine with more than 64 years of experience, spent 5 1/2 hours on the witness stand serving as a forensic pathologist on the Curtis Lovelace murder trial in Quincy, Ill. Read more.

Dr. Bluth, professor of Pathology at WSU School of Medicine, is spreading the word on the role of the laboratory in toxicology and drug testing with two recent outreach efforts aimed at the health care industry as a whole. Read more.

Dr. Steinle, professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology and of Ophthalmology for the WSU School of Medicine, has been appointed a member of the Diseases and Pathophysiology of the Visual System Study Section at the Center for Scientific Review of the National Institutes of Health. Read more.

Dr. Fritz, assistant professor of Neurology for the WSU School of Medicine and assistant professor of Physical Therapy for the WSU Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, has for the second time secured a prestigious award for research in the field of multiple sclerosis.
