Removing barriers to leading-edge medical education, Dr. John and Mrs. Denise Carethers establish an endowed scholarship

Inspired to help reduce the cost of medical education, John Carethers, ’85, M.D. ’89, and his wife, Denise Carethers have established the Dr. John and Denise Carethers Endowed Scholarship in the School of Medicine. “Cost was a factor when I chose medical school, but choosing the Wayne State School of Medicine was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Dr. Carethers said. Donations made to the Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Annual Fund directly impact student organizations. More than 80 percent of the Annual Fund is allocated to student-related objectives. With the help of your donations, the Association of Students for Hinduism Awareness was able to provide health maintenance checks, flu shots, counseling and insurance information to families who attended the health fair at the Parashakthi Temple in Pontiac, Mich. Endowed Research Fund in the Department of Dermatology honors father and son alumni legacy

Ronald Kerwin, M.D. ’76, Res. ’81 and his wife, Cheryl Kerwin, first established an endowed research fund in the Department of Dermatology in 2012 as a way to support the Wayne State University School of Medicine during the Pivotal Moments campaign. Today, the Dr. Ronald D. Kerwin and Dr. Leonard Y. Kerwin Endowed Research Fund is advancing dermatology research at the School of Medicine. Click here to read more.

Hugh Hendrie, MB ’68, Ch.B., DSc, was recently honored with the Henry Wisniewski Lifetime Achievement Award in Alzheimer’s Disease Research at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London. Read more.    


J. Patricia Dhar, M.D., Professor of Medicine, was highlighted and selected for poster tours at the 2017 American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting, held Nov. 4-8 in San Diego. Read more.

Brendan Byrne, M.D. ’07, and Tony Bielawski, M.D. ’04, are stationed at the Naval Undersea Rescue Command. They deployed in the search and rescue effort for the ASA San Juan, the Argentinian submarine that went missing.
