Four distinguished physicians honored during Medical Alumni Reunion 2018

The Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Association celebrated and honored the contributions of four distinguished physicians during an awards banquet that capped the 2018 Medical Alumni Reunion weekend. The four were recognized May 19 at a reunion dinner at MGM Grand in Detroit following continuing medical education sessions, lunch and a campus tour at the School of Medicine. The annual event drew more than 340 members of special reunion classes and guests from across the country. Click here to read more. Click here to see reunion photos.

Pioneers in nasal and sinus care give back to the School of Medicine

Global medical leaders Ketan Mehta, M.D. '85, Fel. '87 and Nina Mehta '86, have revolutionized the at-home nasal and sinus care paradigm through their company, NeilMed Pharmaceuticals Inc. Dr. Mehta and Ms. Mehta founded the company in 2000, and today their flagship products - the NeilMed SINUS RINSE and NeilMed Neti Pot - are among their 40 products sold all over the world. Dr. Mehta and Ms. Mehta are Wayne State alumni, and they credit the university for part of their success. Read more.

School of Medicine Sesquicentennial Gala set for Sept. 22 at MGM Grand Detroit

The Wayne State University School of Medicine will host a "A Sesquicentennial Celebration," a black-tie gala recognizing our 150-year history of urban clinical excellence and community outreach in the heart of Detroit. The gala will take place Sept. 22 at MGM Grand Detroit. During the event, we will honor distinguished alumni and community members with the 2018 Ambassador, Trailblazer and Distinguished Community Service awards. Musical entertainment will be provided by the popular, local tribute band Fifty Amp Fuse.  Click here for more information and to register.


Recognizing the impact of philanthropy on the School of Medicine, the school launches new Giving Matters e-newsletter

Since its founding in 1868, the Wayne State University School of Medicine has grown and flourished thanks to the support and loyalty of alumni and friends who have dedicated time, talent and resources to enriching the institution and advancing its mission. Now, during the school’s sesquicentennial anniversary and the conclusion of the Pivotal Moments Campaign, the WSU School of Medicine Office of Development and Alumni Affairs is excited to announce a new e-newsletter, Giving Matters, which showcases the tremendous impact of the school’s dedicated philanthropic partners. This inaugural edition provides a few storied examples of generosity, thoughtfulness and a powerful drive to propel the School of Medicine’s vision to transform the promise of access to equal health into a reality for all. Read Giving Matters.

Golf for a great cause! The Robert R. Frank Student-Run Free Clinic offers full-service, free, quality primary and preventive care to uninsured patients in Detroit. Funds raised from the golf outing will be used to purchase medication, laboratory services, and equipment that will allow the clinic to operate and expand in the coming year. Click here for more information and to register.

Thomas Janisse, M.D. '75, is a storyteller. As the founding editor-in-chief of the venerable The Permanente Journal, Dr. Janisse has written, edited and published a wide body of works within the field of narrative medicine. A successful anesthesiologist in Portland, Ore., Dr. Janisse continues to cultivate his literary perspective, especially when engaging with patients. Read more.

Do you know of someone interested in medical school? On August 15, the Office of Admissions is hosting Med. Ed. Prep- an event designed for perspective medical students as an opportunity to get an inside look at the school and how to best prepare! The program will include a panel discussion with faculty and students, as well as an interactive session on Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) with our admissions and pre-health advising professionals.
