Curriculum transformation: Building Highways to Excellence

As the members of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Class of 2022 prepare to begin their medical school careers, we are excited to launch the first phase of the new Highways to Excellence curriculum. While our history and graduates have proved our urban clinical excellence strength and impact in numerous ways, we are transforming our curriculum to provide the best student experience possible – a learning environment informed by extensive research, analysis and review that will provide physicians-in-training with a unique set of tools, skills, knowledge and experiences to position them as leaders in medicine. Read more.

Medical Alumni Annual Fund Impact: Code Blue and Street Medicine

Your support and the growth of the Medical Alumni Annual Fund allows our medical students to engage with the Detroit community in a very hands on and positive way! With your support, two of the Board of Student Organizations, Code Blue and Street Medicine, have made an incredible impact in the community. Code Blue seeks to engage the children of Detroit in an effort to increase awareness and interest in the fields of science and medicine. They will be working with a new school, Washington Carver Academy, in the coming year. Street Medicine has participated in more than 90 street runs and has assisted nearly 400 patients. It has also played a major role in assisting the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Hepatitis A outbreak in Detroit by providing more than 200 vaccinations. These opportunities are made possible with the help of the Medical Alumni Annual Fund! If you are interested in making a donation to the Medical Alumni Annual Fund, click here.

Small group leaders needed for new Population, Patient, Physician and Professionalism course

P4 is a Year 1 course that will emphasize the interconnected-ness of the evolving professional identity of a physician connected to patients and populations.  For the 21st century, physicians must be competent in not only Basic Sciences (e.g., biochemistry, anatomy, physiology) and Clinical Sciences (e.g., physical examination, patient communication, and clinical diagnosis), but also in Health Systems Science, a science that complements Basic and Clinical Sciences. Health Systems Science includes subject areas such as population health management, behavioral and social determinants of health, health systems improvement, and value-based care.   The P4 course exposes students to their roles as clinician, leader, interprofessional collaborator, scholar and systems analyst through large group sessions, small group sessions, online modules, self-directed reflective assignments, and clinical opportunities in the community.
