Horowitz, Levin kick off symposium on Inspector General Act

Inspector General Michael Horowitz of the U.S. Department of Justice and former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin delivered opening remarks at the Levin Center at Wayne State University Law School’s June 13 symposium "The Role of Inspectors General in Congressional Oversight." The two-panel symposium in Washington, D.C., honored the 40th anniversary of the Inspector General Act by bringing together current and former inspectors general (IGs) and other experts for a discussion on the critical role IGs play in congressional oversight.

Center sends 4 legal interns to Capitol Hill Center sends 4 legal interns to Capitol Hill  

The Levin Center at Wayne Law chose four law students to serve as legal interns in congressional committee offices in Washington, D.C. this summer. The internships were awarded to: Marie Bonnici, Marisa Hamel, Shelbie Rose and Marilyn Yousif. Each position involved work with congressional staff from both parties and a bipartisan approach to oversight. 

Carlson, Gable named inaugural research scholars  

The Levin Center at Wayne Law has named Associate Professors Kirsten Matoy Carlson and Lance Gable the inaugural Levin Center Research Scholars. The award will be presented annually to a member of the Wayne Law faculty in an effort to support scholarship central to the mission of the Levin Center. Sen. Levin is partnering with Carlson to teach a Legislation course at Wayne Law this fall.

New book offers exclusive account of Levin investigations New book offers exclusive account of Levin investigations  

Elise Bean, Washington co-director of the Levin Center at Wayne Law, is the author of "Financial Exposure: Carl Levin’s Senate Investigations into Finance and Tax Abuse." It offers a rare, insider's account of how Levin and his Republican colleagues worked together on high-profile inquiries into such matters as money laundering by global bank HSBC, accounting frauds leading to the collapse of Enron, the role of Goldman Sachs in the financial crisis and high-risk trades that caused JPMorgan Chase to lose more than $6 billion.

Elise Bean joined a panel of leading scholars at the annual American Political Science Association conference in Boston to discuss "Congressional Oversight and Investigations." The conference attracted more than 7,000 attendees. The panelists included professors from Harvard, Princeton, University of North Carolina, University of Virginia and Yale.

The Levin Center at Wayne Law's strategic plan elaborates on the activities the center is likely to undertake to advance its mission, while maintaining the flexibility to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. Several action items are already in progress or in the planning stages.

Levin talks SCOTUS confirmation and the nuclear option  

Sen. Carl Levin spoke to Wayne Law students and the public about the "nuclear option," put in place by Democrats in the Senate in November 2013. He also discussed how the nuclear option is affecting the upcoming vote to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Oversight training, conferences

Congressional Oversight Boot Camps train 165  Congressional Oversight Boot Camps train 165  

As of August, the Levin Center at Wayne Law, in partnership with the Project on Government Oversight and The Lugar Center, has hosted eight Congressional Oversight Boot Camps, training more than 165 staff members from both parties on the art and practice of bipartisan oversight.

Levin Center partners with Federalist Society

 

On June 13, the Levin Center, in partnership with the Federalist Society, sponsored a program on oversight for new members of Congress, featuring a discussion with Sens. Carl Levin and Tom Coburn, M.D. The goal is to expand this program to acquaint more new members with Congress’ oversight function when the 116th Congress convenes after the fall 2018 elections.
