Wayne State University wins national award for huge improvement in graduation rates

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) named Wayne State University the winner of its 2018 Degree Completion Award during its annual meeting in New Orleans. The annual Degree Completion Award identifies and honors institutions using innovative strategies or programs to increase retention and graduation outcomes and decrease achievement gaps. To markedly boost graduation rates, Wayne State launched a Student Retention Initiative in 2011, investing more than $10 million in student success over the following five years.

How 'smart' insulin can revolutionize Type 1 diabetes treatment  

Insulin injections are the most common treatment methods for Type 1 diabetes, which affects over 1 million individuals in the nation. While alternative approaches such as transplantation or immune therapies are being studied, another promising treatment to consider is “smart” insulin, or glucose-responsive insulin, which could supplant more invasive traditional procedures and ensure ideal glucose control for patients every day.

Opening act: Alumnus rocks Middle East with Rolling Stone  

At 19 years old, Waref Hawasli ’06 was managing a band from his college dorm room. By 23, his passion for handling artists had inspired dreams of becoming music’s Jerry Maguire. By 27, he was the founding publisher of Rolling Stone Middle East magazine. Ten years and thousands of miles later, Hawasli’s passion for music and his entrepreneurial drive continue to blare. The Wayne State University alumnus recently launched Opnr — a website and app that help local musicians find gigs — with support from TechTown Detroit, the WSU-affiliated business incubator.

Sean Anderson Foundation donates $10K to HIGH Program  

The Sean Anderson Foundation has donated $10,000 to benefit Wayne State University’s HIGH (Helping Individuals Go Higher) Program. This is the third gift from the foundation in support of the HIGH Program. In 2016, the foundation created a $25,000 endowment for the program, exemplifying recording artist Big Sean’s commitment to improving the quality of life of young people.

SMASH Wayne State accepting applications for next cohort  

Know a ninth grade student who enjoys a challenge, would like to experience college life and is ready to prepare for a future in STEM? SMASH Wayne State — an initiative to expose and engage underserved high school students in the metro Detroit area to science, technology, engineering and mathematics — is accepting applications for its next cohort of future leaders. In addition to rigorous STEM classes, SMASH Wayne State incorporates courses in writing, entrepreneurship and social justice to constitute a well-balanced curriculum.
