Wayne State University

Dear campus community,

Some of you might already be aware that David Janer, a third-year law student at Wayne State University, died while in his apartment on campus over the weekend. Tragically, David took his own life. His death comes as a shock to all of us, and especially to his mother and father, to whom I expressed my condolences yesterday afternoon. As a father, I can only imagine the depth of their grief.

A university is a place of growth and vibrancy, and the loss of any member of our community is difficult to process and understand. It is particularly troubling when it involves a student working toward a degree and a future of unlimited possibilities. I join the entire Wayne State community in extending our thoughts and prayers to David's family, friends, classmates and all who knew him. We lost a member of the Wayne State family, and we grieve with them.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 17, at Hebrew Memorial Chapel in Oak Park. More details are available here.

For those of you who would like help in coping with this tragic loss, I encourage you to access the available university resources for support, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached at 313-577-3398. Other resources you may want to consider contacting include:

  • Protocall (CAPS, after hours): 313-577-9982
  • Dean of Students Office: 313-577-1010
  • Hillel of Metro Detroit: 313-577-3459
  • Newman Catholic Center: 313-577-3462
  • University Islamic Center of Detroit: 313-818-3837

We often speak about wellness and safety in our community, and we take those issues seriously. But we should remind ourselves that we can extend our concerns to others as well: that wellness and safety at Wayne State also means looking out for each other, and watching for signs that others may need help. Let's please continue to take care of ourselves and each other.

Sincerely,

M. Roy Wilson signature
