CAMPUS HOUSING MOVE OUT UPDATE

Today, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Michigan.  WSU supports the purpose of the order which is to reduce the movement and potential exposure to the coronavirus (COVID-19).   We are providing this update to advise you on your options going forward as you make your decision to stay on campus or check out and move out.  Regardless of your choice, in all you do please continue following the recommendations on social distancing and good hygiene practices to protect yourself and those around you.  WSU continues to post updates on the WSU coronavirus website

Checking Out and Moving Off-Campus

  1.  If you are already here and want to move out, we believe that the “Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive Order still allows you to pack up and move out to off-campus housing in Michigan or elsewhere.  There is no requirement that you do so, and each of us needs to make the decision about how to best protect our personal health.

    If you are going to move out by April 9, 2020 please do make your move out reservation and follow the express check-out process that can be found on the housing website.  If you arrive outside of the move-out time you selected, you will be asked to wait unless there is an opening available in the schedule.

    Failure to abide by these check out requirements may result in the postponement of your move out and/or loss of the $850 credit to your student account.

  1. If you are here and want to leave without moving out and checking out now, you can sign up to leave your things in your current room until the end of the semester when you will need to move out.  When you sign up by April 9 your building access will be suspended and you will be eligible for the credit to your student account.  Please go online and complete the Storage Request form in the Housing Self-Service portal.  This form must be completed by April 9, 2020 in order to be eligible for the $850 credit to your student account.  There is a video tutorial about how to complete this form here.  We will provide more information about your final move-out process later in April.

  1. If you have already moved out and left campus and did NOT complete the check-out process by turning in your key and building sticker, you can:
  1. You can download and complete the front of the express move out envelope here and mail it with your key and ID sticker to:
    WSU Housing & Residential Life, 5221 Gullen Mall, SCB 598, Detroit, MI 48202.  Attention:  CHECK OUT.

    Your mail must be postmarked by April 9, 2020 to be eligible for the credit to your student account.

  2. You can go online and complete the Storage Request form in the Housing Self-Service portal by April 9, 2020 in order to be eligible for the credit to your student account.  Your building access will be suspended and you must return at the end of the semester to move out.  There is a video tutorial about how to complete this form here.  We will provide more information about your final move-out process later in April.

All campus residents who follow the procedures outlined above by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2020 will receive a credit to your student account of $850.  If you are leaving and live in University Tower Apartments, the $850 credit is one per apartment and pro-rated the same way as your apartment rent is pro-rated among the residents.

Please remember it is each of our responsibility to practice mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.  We will appreciate your cooperation in:

  • bringing your own pen to fill out your Express Check-out envelope;
  • creating physical distance while using elevators, and not creating lines or groups in elevator lobbies or public spaces;
  • bringing your own dollies and carts from home to limit the sharing of move-out equipment.
  • limiting the number of people helping you move out, and all who are helping must comply with social distancing requirements.

WSU has limited carts to deploy as our normal rental supply is not available as a result of the pandemic.  If you choose to use a WSU cart, please bring your own Clorox wipes to sanitize the cart before use.  (WSU has not been able to procure a large amount of sanitation wipes due to high demand.)

Staying on Campus

If your plan is to stay on campus through the end of the semester on April 29, 2020, please know that you are welcome to do so and that housing and dining will remain open to support you.  We need to know you are staying, so please be sure you have already told us by having already completed the Winter 2020 Housing Intent or by emailing us at housing@wayne.edu

Mail and Guest Changes

As part of our mitigation strategy please be aware that we have suspended the guest registration process and guests will not be permitted within our campus housing facilities.  In addition, daily mail service to our buildings will be suspended due to a reduction in the workforce on campus and by USPS in Michigan to comply with the Governor’s order.

Dining Changes:

If you have a meal plan and are staying, the Towers Café is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for take-out meals.  Starting Wednesday, March 25, 2020, the take-out process will be streamlined and hot and cold food will be pre-packaged and available at the door.  Very few of you are going to breakfast, so we will begin offering breakfast items during the dinner hour which you will be able to take with you for the next day if you want to do that.  We will also start offering “snack bags” that you can take with you to fill in the gaps between meals.  Look for more information on these changes to be posted at the Towers Café entrance.

Be Safe Moving Out and Thank You for Living on Campus!

If you have any questions about this move out process, please email housing@wayne.edu or access our online chat.  We have staff ready to assist you who will return an email or a phone call to you.

Sincerely,

Tim Michael
