Office of Housing & Residential Life - Wayne State University

TO:       All Campus Residents
FROM:  Tim Michael, Associate Vice President and CHO
SUBJ:    Closure of Atchison Hall on March 29, 2020

The situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is evolving rapidly, and I am writing to keep you informed about how our changing response is impacting campus residents.  As a reminder, social distancing and following recommended good hygiene practices are the best ways to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Please continue to check the WSU coronavirus website for the most recent updates and guidance.

Atchison Hall to Close March 29, 2020, at 5 p.m.

We regret the need to close Atchison Hall due to the low number of residents remaining and our need to optimize the duties of our remaining residence life staff.  We have communicated separately this evening with the remaining residents in Atchison about this decision, and procedures are in place to assist them with moving out by this Sunday, March 29, 2020, by 5 p.m.  After Sunday at 5 p.m., resident access to Atchison will be cancelled.

There may be a few Atchison residents who need to remain on campus, and they will be moving to currently empty rooms in our remaining housing facilities.

At this time there are no plans to close other housing buildings.  As residents continue to move out, that decision could change as we continuously assess occupancy and available staffing levels.

We know this decision may be an inconvenience to some residents. Our number one goal remains the safety of our residents.  We believe this closure is the most prudent thing we can do to ensure your safety.  Thank you for your continuing flexibility and understanding as we respond to the changing circumstances on campus as the pandemic persists.

With many of our staff working remotely at this time during the Governor’s Order, please email housing@wayne.edu if you need to communicate with us.  Someone will respond to your inquiry as soon as possible.
