University Library System - Wayne State University

UGL

You can now return your library

materials on campus or at your

local public library

Wayne State community,

We hope this message finds you well during this difficult time.

The Wayne State University Library System recognizes that when Governor Whitmer’s first stay-at-home order was issued in mid-March, it was necessary for you to retain borrowed library materials beyond the initial due date. You will not be responsible for any overdue fees or fines that incurred during this time. For undergraduates, staff and guests, due dates for all materials have been extended through July 15, 2020. Due dates for faculty and graduate students have been extended through September 4, 2020.

If you do have materials to return, we are now inviting you to return those items in any of the following ways:

On campus returns

If you are local to campus, you can drop your materials in any of the library drop boxes on campus:
When using the Wayne State drop box, any media, like CDs, DVDs or borrowed technology must be packed to prevent damage. Books can be returned without packing. If you have items too large for the drop boxes, please call (313) 577-4014 to arrange an alternative drop off.

Off campus returns using RIDES

If you would prefer not to travel to campus, but you live in Michigan, you can return all borrowed materials at your local public library through the RIDES delivery system. RIDES is a state-wide courier system that is responsible for delivering library materials to local library branches throughout the state. The service is free and you would only be responsible for providing packing materials to return your items. (See instructions for properly packing items below.) ALL MATERIALS BEING SENT THROUGH RIDES MUST BE PROPERLY PACKED.

Off campus returns using USPS

If you would prefer to return your items via the United States Postal Service, please follow steps 1-3 in the directions outlined below and ship the materials to:

Directions for properly packing items for return

Please follow these step-by-step instructions for packing your materials for return. Please note: ALL MATERIALS MUST BE PACKED TO USE RIDES OR USPS. Only media and technology items need to be packed to use the Wayne State campus drop boxes.

Step 1: Verify the materials you have checked out by visiting My Library and/or your ILL account.

Step: 2: Separate the books from media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) These will need to be packed separately.

Step 3:  Follow this Youtube video on how to properly pack both books and media.

Step 4: Once you have packed your items, print or write out the text exactly as it appears on the below label. This label will help ensure the boxes are returned to Wayne State.

Step 5: Locate the closest participating RIDES library near you that is open and staffed—you cannot use a public library drop box. It must be given to a person. Follow the interactive map at https://elibrary.mel.org/screens/participating.html#map

Step 6: Take your items to the local library that you selected and drop them off with a staff member through their preferred methods (curbside, inside).

Step 7: This step is optional, but encouraged. Please fill out this form to let us know the date and library that you dropped your items off at. This will allow us to better track any items that may be misplaced or lost during transit.

It may take a couple of weeks for your materials to arrive back to Wayne State so please be patient while we process your return. You will not incur any additional charges during this time.
