Dear Graduate Students,

Based on the recommendation of the College of Engineering Research Advisory Committee, I am pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Ralph H. Kummler Award for Distinguished Achievement in Graduate Student Research: Ms. Maryam Basij and Mr. Samji Samira.

Ms. Maryam Basij is a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering studying under Dr. Mohammad Mehrmohammadi. Maryam's PhD thesis focuses on "Design and Development of a Miniaturized Combined US/PA Endoscopic System." Ms. Basij has published 13 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious academic journals, in addition to numerous conference proceedings for highly-acclaimed conferences. Her work has been cited over 100 times by researchers from all over the world and her work continues as she awaits review feedback for three additional articles. According to her advisor, Dr. Mehrmohammadi, Maryam is a "highly motivated and sincere student with a keen desire for learning. She has consistently demonstrated an ability to rise to any challenges that she must face. She is intelligent, inquisitive, and yearns to gain in-depth knowldege." 

Mr. Samji Samira is a Ph.D. candidate in Chemical Engineering studying under Dr. Eranda Nikolla. Samji's Ph.D. thesis focuses on "Predictive Tools for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis on Non-stoichiometric Mixed Metal Oxides for Fuel cells and Alkali Metal-O2 Batteries." Mr. Samira has published eight peer-reviewed journal articles and has given numerous oral and poster presentations at prestigious conferences. According to his advisor, Dr. Nikolla, "he has been exceptional in research as evidenced by numerous excellent publications in reputable, peer review journals in the field of catalysis and electrocatalysis."

Please join me in congratulating these outstanding graduate student researchers and their advisors. We appreciate their contributions to the research enterprise at the College of Engineering and at Wayne State University.
