Wayne State University

Greetings, Warriors,

Earlier this month, we conducted a campuswide survey to better understand our campus’ vaccination status. The results were encouraging: Approximately 86% of all respondents — including 96% of all faculty respondents — reported that they are fully vaccinated. Download full report (pdf). This is great news, and I’m pleased that so many of our Warriors have made this decision.

Approximately 81% of our undergraduate and 91% of our graduate student respondents reported being fully vaccinated. While these results are surprisingly good, we are mindful of the particular risks of congregate living; therefore, we are implementing a targeted mandate for students living in university housing for the fall 2021 semester. This action is supported by survey results from current housing residents, who overwhelmingly support a targeted mandate. More information — including how to provide proof of vaccination — will come from the Office of Housing and Residential Life in the near future.

This targeted mandate — which is similar to those implemented by several Michigan universities — will help protect those who live in close proximity to each other. It will also help us prevent spread of the virus on our campus while allowing students to interact and engage face to face — a vital part of the college experience.

Some of you may have questions or concerns. I urge you to visit the Campus Health Center’s website, where you will find a list of frequently asked questions. Additionally, in the coming weeks, we will conduct a series of virtual town hall meetings led by members of our Campus Health Committee to discuss the latest about the virus, its variants, the vaccines and health requirements on campus. Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, July 29, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Submit your questions and register.

Last week, we also launched our Summer Vaccine Incentive, which offers students, faculty and staff the chance to win great prizes for getting their vaccination. Find out more on our coronavirus website and submit your proof of vaccination by Aug. 29. If you have not yet received your vaccination, you can make an appointment at the Campus Health Center or at a location convenient to you.

After so much time apart, we are excited to return to campus, and it will be great to see our campus full and vibrant again. Thank you for your continued dedication to the safety of our community, and for showing the world what it means to be Warrior Strong.
