Wayne State University

Dear campus community,

Last night, Michigan lost Sen. Carl Levin, the longest-serving U.S. senator in Michigan’s history and a tremendous friend of Wayne State. He died after a long illness at age 87.

Sen. Levin served 36 years in the U.S. Senate, representing Michigan with a fervor and purpose rarely seen in the political arena. He devoted his life to public service and was a tireless worker on behalf of Michigan families. He was committed to civil rights, protecting Michigan’s environment, Michigan’s men and women in the military, and many other issues rooted in justice and equality. Moreover, he was a consensus-builder who frequently built alliances across the aisle to craft policy that benefited all Michigan citizens.

In 2015, Sen. Levin lent his name to the Levin Center at Wayne Law. The mission of the Levin Center is to strengthen the integrity, transparency and accountability of public and private institutions, a mission that he embodied through his diligent and tireless work in public service. Sen. Levin also served as Wayne Law’s distinguished legislator in residence, co-teaching courses on various subjects, including tax law and policy and legislative process and oversight.

I was honored to know Sen. Levin. Everything you’ve heard about his humility, tenacity and commitment to Michigan citizens is true. Michigan citizens of all generations owe a debt of gratitude to him for his stalwart and unflinching devotion to making this a better place for all.

His was a life well lived. We have been honored by Sen. Levin’s association with Wayne State and are grateful for his deep commitment to Wayne Law and its students and faculty.
