Wayne State University

Dear friends,

Last year at this time, I announced Bold Moves, a campus-wide initiative to stimulate big ideas at Wayne State — ideas that can be truly impactful to the university, Detroit, Michigan and the world.

We received more than 100 projects from each corner of the campus, exemplifying the Warrior Strong spirit of innovation and collaboration. Nearly every project reached beyond individual departments, units, schools or colleges to realize the maximum effect of their ideas. We identified both internal and external collaborators and forged new partnerships.

Ideas were narrowed down by a selection committee of university leaders who gave their time and expertise to this project. I want to thank Susan Burns, Laurie Lauzon Clabo, Linda Beale, Steve Lanier, David Strauss, Wei-Zen Wei and Michael Wright for working to bring these ideas forward.

I am grateful to all who submitted an idea for this new initiative. Bold Moves is not the next fundraising campaign, but it is one pathway to identifying projects and programs that may attract interest from philanthropists who want to be transformational. These selected seven Bold Moves ideas are a good start as we reach toward what Wayne State can achieve:

  • Advanced Digital Solutions for Stress, Trauma and Anxiety Research and Treatment (ADS-START)
  • ArtsHUB Detroit: Leveraging the Power of Arts and Music to Empower Detroit Children, Families and Communities
  • Center for Health Equity and Community Knowledge in Urban Populations (CHECK-UP)
  • Integrative Center for Engineering and Medicine
  • Levin Center State Oversight Academy (SOA)
  • Reimagining Justice: Community-Engaged Strategies to Facilitate Reform
  • Wayne Mobility Initiative (WMI)

We received many strong projects and programs, some of which will move forward in various ways. And for Wayne State to be successful, there will continue to be a need for big and bold ideas, so there may be future opportunities to present concepts. As the university and Detroit move toward a post-pandemic world, Wayne State will continue to be integral to the development of talent, ideas and solutions.

This initial attempt at a process to identify transformational projects helped clarify ideas, so I invite you to keep thinking, keep dreaming and keep redefining what’s possible.

Sincerely,

M. Roy Wilson
