Campus Health Committee

Dear campus community,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, COVID-19 cases across the state continue to climb. The rate of new cases in Michigan is currently the highest in the nation, with tests showing a 16.9% positivity rate. In the Detroit area, the 10-day positivity average is 7.2%.  On campus, our current positivity rate is 6.42%.

As has been the case throughout the pandemic, the cooperation of our Warrior community has helped prevent the spread of the virus on campus and kept our positivity rates comparatively low. But as the cooler weather moves more of our gatherings indoors and we prepare for holiday travel, it is more important than ever to continue our vigilance.

At the beginning of the semester, the Campus Health Committee instituted an indoor mask policy for the campus community. While we may be tired of wearing masks, they continue to be a vital protection against the spread of COVID-19. On Friday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) issued a public health advisory, recommending that everyone over the age of 2 wear a mask at all indoor gatherings, regardless of vaccination status.

Please continue to wear your masks properly inside all campus buildings, including the Student Center Building and the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center. Noncompliance in these buildings could result in their closure. The Campus Health Committee will continue to monitor the data across the campus, region and state. We are currently at a state of heightened alert, and we will respond accordingly should our tipping point metrics require.

The latest news may be disheartening, but hope is on the horizon. The arrival of boosters, the approval of vaccines for children and new therapeutics can help play a crucial role in reducing spread and preventing serious illness. In the meantime, the best protection is to get vaccinated and follow all health and safety guidelines.

Wayne State has responded admirably throughout this pandemic and set itself up as a model for other institutions to emulate. That is all due to the diligent response of our Warriors. Thank you for your continued commitment to the health and safety of our community, and enjoy your Thanksgiving break.
