School of Medicine - Wayne State University

Dear Class,

We hope you all are having a wonderful holiday time, staying safe, and finding time to do things that bring you joy!

The SOM Covid-19 Taskforce wanted to follow up on President Wilson’s email regarding the pandemic which was sent on 12/23/21 and how it affects the School of Medicine. Please find pertinent points below:

Mandatory Covid Booster and Flu Shot: Beginning Jan. 3, you are required to receive and upload proof of your booster at the time you are eligible, which is six months past the second dose for Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two months past the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The Campus Daily Screener will be updated accordingly, and those who are unvaccinated or past their due date for a booster will not be permitted on campus unless they have an approved waiver. The Campus Health Center is currently offering all vaccines and boosters and has several booster clinics scheduled, including new dates on Jan. 4, 13, and 14 that you can register for now.

Daily Campus Screener: Students must complete the daily screener each day they will be on campus or at a clinical or community site. Anyone with symptoms or awaiting test results should complete the screener every day until cleared by the Campus Health Center. This is vital to monitoring infection prevalence on campus.

Student and Study Spaces: The Shiffman library and other student spaces, including the student lounge, and meditation and music rooms, remain open to students but with smaller capacities. Interview spaces are still available through the Office of Student Affairs and the Shiffman Library for senior students. The Scott Hall Fitness Room is closed until further notice. Please follow all posted signage. Face masks and social distancing are required while on campus.

Student Organization Activities: Service Learning activities hosted by student organizations are permitted to continue in-person. However, all student organization activities unrelated to Service Learning should be conducted virtually only.

Specific for Class of 25: In addition to completing the daily campus screener and using it to scan into Scott Hall/ Mazurek, you MUST also present your screener upon entering in-person academic activities, including Gross Anatomy Lab, and Clinical Skills. Please note that Clinical Skills and Gross Anatomy Labs will continue in person, beginning Jan 3.  Histology, Neuro Labs and P4 will be conducted virtually in the month of January. Expect more communication regarding this from your respective Course Directors (please keep free previously communicated required dates and times regarding Histo & Neuro Labs & P4).

Specific for Class of 24: As you enter your dedicated step period, please see the above regarding study spaces on campus and the appropriate safety protocols.

Specific for Class of 23 & 22: Clinical rotations and electives will continue as scheduled, and please see the above regarding study spaces on campus and the appropriate safety protocols.

We will keep you updated as the situation evolves. Please monitor your email and the School of Medicine Coronavirus website for more updates. Thank you all in everything you are doing to stay safe, keep the WSU Community safe, and wishing you a Happy New Year!

Best,
SOM COVID-19 Taskforce
