Wayne State University

Dear Warriors,

Welcome to a new year and a new semester. I hope you had a restful break and are eager to embrace all of the opportunities 2022 has in store.

As you are aware, we are beginning this semester in a remote format. We are confident this will be a temporary measure. To learn more about the reasoning for the decision and the campus facilities that remain open, please refer to my previous message.

Despite challenges, we persevered in 2021 and, true to form, proved ourselves Warrior Strong. We returned to classrooms and re-engaged with campus activities for the first time in more than a year and celebrated several notable achievements, including tremendous improvements in our graduation rates, the opening of the Wayne State Fieldhouse, substantial increases in our research funding and a return to in-person commencements. There is much to be proud of and thankful for.

I am confident that we will have even more to celebrate in 2022. I am looking forward to April’s Commencement Redux, where “virtual” graduates can return for an in-person celebration of their accomplishments. We will also launch a new five-year strategic plan, complete the Hilberry Gateway project and — one of my personal favorites — bring back the Baroudeur cycling event. But nothing makes me more hopeful about the coming year than anticipating a thriving campus of scholarship and activities.

I encourage you to get involved this semester and stay connected to the Warrior community. The Dean of Students Office offers several virtual activities and events, and our student organizations continue to thrive. Even though we may be starting apart, I hope you’ll take time to get in touch with your classmates and colleagues. These personal connections help build our campus community and offer a strong foundation for your educational journey and future careers.

I can hardly wait until we’re able to gather again on campus. Please be sure to monitor your email and Wayne State’s coronavirus website for the latest information. Until then, stay safe, study hard and be Warrior Strong.
