Wayne State University

Dear colleagues,

As you may know, Steve Lanier will step down from his role as vice president for research Sept. 30, 2022. Timothy Stemmler, assistant vice president for integrative biosciences and professor of pharmaceutical sciences, has agreed to serve as interim vice president for research until a permanent replacement has been selected. The effective date for Tim's appointment is Oct. 1.

Tim joined Wayne State University in 2000 as an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and quickly rose to the rank of professor in 2012. In 2013, he joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Since then, he has held a variety of leadership roles including director of research, associate chair of pharmaceutical sciences, assistant and associate dean of the Graduate School, and associate dean of research for the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

In addition to his exceptional administrative service, Tim has maintained an active research program and substantial teaching responsibilities. He continues his internationally recognized research in iron-sulfur biosynthesis, helping us understand how proteins work and the role they play in the genetic disease Friedreich's ataxia. Tim and his team have applied biochemical, biophysical and structural tools toward this topic — an interdisciplinary approach that has been highly beneficial for not only his research but also the training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Please join me in welcoming Tim to this new administrative role.

I also want to thank Steve for his considerable contributions to the university and wish him the best as he begins his well-deserved sabbatical before returning to the faculty. Since joining Wayne State in 2014, Steve has helped to conceptualize, develop and implement initiatives to address local, regional and global societal challenges across all aspects of our educational, research and service missions. The university community is deeply indebted to Steve for his leadership, dedication and hard work, which has helped to ensure that Wayne State operates a world-class research enterprise.

Regards,

M. Roy Wilson
