Please find pertinent information about your current courses (Human Body Foundations 3, P4, SL, & CS) for the week of 2/13/23-2/17/23, and several important reminders including the Learning Coach Application being open, a word from your OLT Learning Specialist, and the recording from the Intro to Coaching program session, below:

Human Body Foundations 3 with Dr. Braun & Dr. Walker

Congrats on completing Exam 2 in the HBF-III course. We hope you are enjoying your continued study of the anatomy of the head and neuroscience. This week, you will practice your understanding of how the basal ganglia and cerebellum regulate body movements. In gross anatomy lab, you will dissect the orbit as well as the nasal and oral regions. Here are the required active learning sessions for the 7th week of the course:    

Neuroscience Lab 07 (In-Person in the Scott Hall MD Labs) on Monday, February 13 for GOLD groups 9:00 am - 10:30 am and GREEN groups 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. Please prepare for this session by reviewing lecture 58 by Dr. Walker. 

Gross Anatomy Lab 27 (In-Person in the GA Labs) for dissecting GA Group A students on Tuesday, February 14 from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm. Please visit the Canvas page that lists prep information for this session. Labs will be open for completion of the hand-off with receiving GA Group B students from 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm or the following day from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The due date for the lab chart 27 assignment is Wednesday, February 15 at 5:00 pm. 

Gross Anatomy Lab 28 (In-Person in the GA Labs) for dissecting GA Group B students on Thursday, February 16 from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm. Please visit the Canvas page that lists prep information for this session. Labs will be open for completion of the hand-off with receiving GA Group A students from 4:30 pm - 7:00 pm or the following day from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The due date for the lab chart 28 assignment is Friday, February 17 at 5:00 pm. 

Neuroscience Lab 08 (In-Person in the Scott Hall MD Labs) on Friday, February 17 for GREEN groups 9:00 am - 10:30 am and GOLD groups 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. Please prepare for this session by reviewing lecture 66 by Dr. Goebel. 

Ultrasound Training 6 (In-Person in the Scott Hall MD Labs) for ALL students on Friday, February 17.  The class is divided into 3 groups for another hands-on training session led by Dr. Amponsah and his team, this time focused on head and neck.  This time, US Group 3 meets from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm.  US Group 1 meets from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm.  US Group 2 meets from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Please check the Canvas calendar for your group assignment and prep information you'll need for the session.

UNIT 13 - AGING AND DELIVERING BAD NEWS

Our next unit in P4 this Thursday (2/16) continues our discussion of patient communication and aging.   Particular emphasis will be placed on factors involved with healthy aging, Beers Criteria Use in Older Adults, and the proper ways to deliver Bad News.    

Learning Objectives include: Be able to discuss preventative recommendations for healthy aging, learn communication techniques for delivering bad news to a patient, be aware of the variety of causes of memory dysfunction in our aging population,understand patients and their health care professionals often have different perspectives, values, and beliefs about health and illness, especially when communication is limited by language and cultural barriers.

In addition to the three assigned articles for pregroup work, please read Chapter 15 of AMA Health Systems Science.  Quiz submissions are due by Wed Feb 15, 11:59 pm.

As always, check Canvas and your calendar for information about group times and locations, as logistics dictate occasional changes from previous sessions.

• Please submit your 2nd encounter and patient’s biography on the Seg1C Canvas course by February 15, using the posted templates.  Faculty will provide feedback by the end of February after that you may share the biography with your patient.  If you have problems contacting your patient first try by email, phone, and/or text.  If you still have a problem please reach out to Dr. Mendez at ag3928@wayne.edu. 

SELECT ONE MEMBER OF YOUR HOUSE/ANATOMY TABLE GROUP TO RESPOND By Feb 15  for the Seg 2A course project: For Service Learning Seg2A you will be using the Expanded Chronic Care Model (CCM) to develop an education plan for a patient population diagnosed with chronic illness. You research the assigned chronic illness topic to evaluate the healthcare needs of a target population. Include connections to foundational learning in Segment I. Using information you attained in debunking the medical myth, evidence-based strategies for preventative health care for chronic illness. Consider micro, meso, and macro interventions, including community resources, treatment options, and other proactive interventions for the illness of your targeted population, for this project. ONLY ONE MEMBER OF YOUR HOUSE/ANATOMY TABLE GROUP should rank the topics below that your anatomy table group discuss to create a patient education project as part of deliberate practice. Please respond by February 15 by 11:59 pm, no response means your group has selected to allow the service learning team to choose a topic for your group. Submit here. 

• Due to limitations in clinic and mentoring/outreach in-person activities, a Recommendation of two volunteer hours was implemented in January, in service learning
• Check the opportunities listed in the BSO Calendar here. Please complete the required 5 Clinical and 2 Mentoring/Outreach hours by February 26, 2023, and report using the Service Learning portal

I hope you enjoyed the week off from Clinical Skills.  Neuro sessions continue this week, with Final Assessment sessions beginning the following week.

Neuro Sessions

• This will be another follow up encounter.  Expect to collect and document the patient history section similar to the HEENT sessions.
• If your Neuro session is scheduled for next week, please review your Canvas calendar very carefully. Instead of Monday/Tuesday sessions, this week is scheduled on Tuesday/Wednesday. 
• The debrief of this session will serve as a final exam review .  I'll present an overview of what to expect and then a few SPs will be present to help you review any exam maneuvers you'd like to practice ahead of the final. 

Final Assessment

Key Points

Materials are live on Canvas for the final assessment.  For the final, you will be randomly assigned to a case where you will be expected to perform an MSK & Derm, Cardiovascular & Respiratory, Abdominal, or HEENT exam. You can review the possible chief complaints you will receive on Canvas by reviewing the case door notes.  Please note that this will NOT be a follow up encounter. You will be expected to collect all histories from scratch.  You will receive a blank sheet of paper upon your arrival to the Skills Center and will have the entire pre-brief time to generate your template. No outside resources will be permitted.

February 17th, 4:30-6:30pm & 6:30-8:30 pm: Clinical Skills Workshop

Hosted by the Procedures for Future Physicians student organization, this event will be located in Margherio.  You will have the opportunity to practice all four physical exams you may encounter during the final assessment, as well as other skills. M4s will be on site to provide additional coaching. Sign up for a session here.

Learning Coach Applications Now Open from Dr. Reid

Are you a passionate student leader? Do you have a desire to support your peers towards attaining academic success? If you answered, YES to either of these questions, consider partnering with the WSUSOM, Office of Learning and Teaching as a Near-Peer Learning Coach.

Near-Peer Learning Coach Program was created to ensure the long-range success students working in undergraduate medical education curricula by providing them access to highly-skilled tutors and facilitators.

The Office of Learning and Teaching is looking to collaborate with dedicated second-year medical students to carry out this service. Students participating in the Near-Peer Learning Coach Program will have the opportunity engage in longitudinal teaching opportunities being in their second year of medical school and culminating in the fourth year that leads to an IPETP Certification; six credit hours towards their degree upon completion the course competencies for MD4 8035, Directed Teaching in a Medical Education Environment, and a designation in their MSPE letter. Please see the attached job description for more information or to apply to the Near-Peer Learning Coach Program. The deadline to apply is Feb 25^th.

Coaching Program Information

• Aims to support medical students through the development of the Master Adaptive Learner and professional identity formation through the M1 and M2 segments.
• Coaches will guide student advancement through informed reflection, setting and identifying learning goals, and professional identity formation activities
• Coaches will receive 5 faculty development sessions by national coaching leaders
• Students will participate in 5 group and 5 individual coaching sessions
