How is the school WSU SOM Accessible, Aware and Responsive to Feedback from Students as it relates to the library?

We understand the Shiftman Library's operating hours have been a topic of discussion, and we want to provide much needed clarity regarding the current schedule.

The decision to limit 24/7 access was based on a comprehensive analysis of after-hours library usage and direct feedback from our students. Data indicate that foot traffic in the building significantly decreases during late evening and overnight hours. Student surveys and discussions reveal a preference for studying at home or in other off-campus locations.

We recognize that many students prioritize studying in the comfort and convenience of their own homes. This differs significantly from the undergraduate experience when residential proximity to 24/7 libraries is common.

We continually evaluate resources and student needs and are committed to ensuring the Shiftman Library effectively supports your academic success. We will continue to monitor usage patterns and solicit feedback to determine if adjustments are warranted.

24/7 Study Resources Beyond the Library

To address any concerns students had, we indeed have an option for 24/7 studying.

We understand the importance of flexibility, so when the library closes, your studies do not have to stop. With your WSU student identification, you can access additional 24/7 resources:

How is the school responsive to feedback from students as it relates to the Student Study and Relaxation Spaces onsite at WSUSOM?

The School of Medicine encourages and responds to student feedback regarding study and relaxation spaces through multiple channels, ensuring continuous improvement and responsiveness. Students can share insights and concerns through the Warrior Med Suggestion Form, which is reviewed by Kanye Gardner, director of Continuous Quality Improvement. in the Office of Assessment, Accreditation, and Continuous Quality Improvement. Mr. Gardner prioritizes student input and welcomes participation on his continuous improvement team.

For issues related to the physical maintenance, students can utilize the Warrior Med Facilities Feedback Form. The form is managed by Facilities Manager Krista Mitchell, who ensures prompt attention to reported problems. Scott Nelson, who manages the day-to-day operations of the rooms in Learning Spaces and Support (LSS), is readily accessible and committed to providing timely responses to student inquiries.

Student representatives from each year (M1-M4) serve as vital conduits for feedback, ensuring student concerns are communicated to appropriate parties. Your School of Medicine has collaborated diligently with clinical partners to ensure all sites provide essential amenities. The school conducts regular site visits and assessments to verify compliance with established standards.

  • Expectation of amenities: The goal is to provide students with a consistent and equitable experience across all clinical sites.
  • Contractual agreements: Contracts with clinical partners stipulate the provision of dedicated student spaces.
  • Ongoing monitoring: The school continuously monitors the quality and availability of these spaces, addressing concerns promptly.

The school expects each site will provide designated areas for students: study areas, relaxation spaces, food options, secure storage, meditation spaces, call rooms and lactation rooms for maternal support.

We are committed to student feedback and continuous improvement.

We value feedback and encourage students to report issues or concerns regarding study and relaxation spaces. Your feedback drives continuous improvement and ensures clinical sites meet the evolving needs of students.

By prioritizing the provision of well-equipped study and relaxation spaces, WSUSOM demonstrates its commitment to supporting the academic success and well-being of its students during their crucial clerkship years.

How does the school respond to feedback relating to WSUSOM Accessible, Aware and Responsive to Feedback from Students as it relates to the student study and relaxation spaces at the clinical sites?

The school is committed to providing responsive feedback mechanisms for all student study and relaxation spaces at clinical sites.

For M3 students completing clerkships, each clinical site features a dedicated coordinator who serves as the primary point of contact for questions and concerns. Students are introduced to coordinators during orientation and receive information on site amenities. Additionally, M3 and M4 curricular representatives are available to address student feedback.

Starting this spring, the school will launch the Clinical Site Feedback Form, enabling students to provide direct, real-time feedback to Associate Dean for Clinical Education Christopher Steffes, M.D.; Director of Continuous Quality Improvement Kanye Gardner; and site coordinators. While the school does not own these sites, our agreements stipulate that they must provide dedicated student spaces meeting specific criteria: study areas, relaxation spaces, food options, secure storage, meditation spaces, call rooms, and lactation rooms. All sites have been assessed to ensure they meet standards for availability, cleanliness, and accessibility.

The Clinical Site Feedback Form will facilitate communication of student concerns. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to provide additional feedback during their annual end-of-year clerkship review. The Office of Assessment, Accreditation, and Continuous Quality Improvement will incorporate site-specific reports into their mid-year and annual clerkship reviews.

WSUSOM remains dedicated to fostering open communication with students and continuously improving our partnerships with clinical sites.
