Teaching@Wayne: Supporting students (and ourselves!) April 29, 2020

Congratulations, Class of 2020!

Congrats Class of 2020First, we would like to extend a huge round of applause to all of our Warrior Graduates! We hope you are incredibly proud of your efforts and that you find the time and opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments with your loved ones.

We also know some of our wonderful and dedicated faculty members are among this semester's graduating class, so a special shout-out to them!

Take a moment to visit WSU's Virtual Commencement page, where graduates are sharing their stories (#MyWSUStory). You can also send an e-card from this site to offer congratulations to your graduating students.

Supporting students through Spring/Summer and beyond

WSU faculty have been so impressive throughout during the pandemic transition in so many ways, but most especially in how you have showed up to support your students. Today, we offer resources you can use to keep supporting your students throughout the pandemic response, in terms of learning and in terms of mental and emotional health. Some resources are student-focused and some are faculty-focused, so please peruse, review, and share!

Student-focused resources that you can share with your classes!

Angela Zanardelli Sickler previews

The Study Skills Academy team, led by Angela Zanardelli Sickler, Associate Director, sprang into action to create "The Effective Online Learner," an engaging, self-paced Canvas course that will help WSU students bolster the skills they need to learn online. Watch Angela's overview video above to learn more about it, then share this link with your students and encourage them to sign up! (The link will allow them to self-enroll in the course.)

We also recommend sharing the following links with your students (either via a page in a Canvas module, via a Canvas announcement, or via email):

Faculty-focused resources that you can use yourself to support your students!

10 Ways to Support Students Online (Pandemic ed.) slide deck

  • We were overwhelmed with the attendance and participation during our "10 Ways to Support Students Online (Pandemic ed.)" webinar earlier this week. Led by Shantalea Johns (Part-Time Faculty and Academic Advisor, Social Work) and Stephanie Kastely (WSU Suicide Prevention Coordinator), this webinar was not recorded due to potentially sensitive content. However, Shantalea and Stephanie generously shared their presentation, which is full of strategies for helping your students cope with the personal challenges they may be facing during this time. Click the title above to download their slides!

How Faculty Can Help Students Study More Effectively (10:00 min. video and silde deck)

  • Based on the work of Dr. Saundra McGuire, this OTL resource walks you through how you can integrate the study cycle into your teaching (regardless of modality) to help your students study more effectively. First, watch the video (10:00 min) then grab the slide deck for future reference.

Supporting ourselves, too!

We know everyone is struggling to some degree with the abrupt changes in our professional and personal lives. Burnout is a real concern, so we offer these resources to help you stay balanced, motivated, and sane as we continue to move through challenging waters:
