Associate Provost for Academic Programs - Wayne State University

Good afternoon,

For Fall 2020, we will be offering more flexible meeting types for classes on the schedule, and invite you to review your schedule for any adjustments needed in response to the pandemic. We will begin making use of the “meeting type” field to display information on how sections will be offered. We also request that all faculty make their meeting information clear in their syllabi as well. Please notify students as the schedules are changed as automatic email notifications will not be sent.

If enrollment does not exist we can adjust the Instructional Method and the Meeting Type so they match. (For now, Synchronous classes will still show as Web.)

But, if enrollment already exists, we can not adjust instructional methods. But, rather than canceling the section, we will denote new meeting types on the schedule. This also gives us a guidepost to use if we need to run conversions on the schedule at a later date. The meeting type is different than the instructional method, but it appears clearly on the class schedule for students on the search results page as well as in the Instructor/Meeting Times tab. Unfortunately, it is not searchable.

We will have three options for meeting types:

  • CLAS - will be used for Traditional, face to face meetings. This will require days/times and room assignments.
  • WEB - will be used for Online sections that do not require in-person or online meetings. No rooms, days or times will be assigned.
  • SYNC - will be used for synchronous online sections which do require an online meeting day/time. No rooms will be assigned.Unless you have a pre-existing exception to the schedule matrix, these times must follow the matrix as it will help reduce time conflict errors for students.

Each of these schedule types will appear on the class schedule as pictured here. The highlighted field is the field we will be able to change.  It has, typically, been listed as “Class” as in the first section of KHS 1010.  A class a department has chosen to offer synchronously for Fall will show as synchronous, and an asynchronous section will show as Web.

For Hybrid classes, which require meeting times on campus as well as online experiences, we can denote which dates and times class will be held on campus.

Please enter your preferences in the “Comment” section in WISE.  This will trigger an email to the scheduling staff to make updates where we can.

Changing the actual instructional method for classes with enrollment will require a script written against Banner.  We are currently working on that.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the Scheduling Office at scheduling@wayne.edu.

Best wishes,
