Wayne State University Student Senate

On behalf of the WSU Student Senate, we would like to send our thoughts and condolences to the families of George Floyd, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and numerous others who lost their lives to police brutality and racial injustice. Our country continues to disregard the lives of African Americans through systematic racism and oppression.

Our role as a campus community is to ensure that all students are safe and supported. We all need to do better when it comes to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We must acknowledge the institutional racism not only present in the criminal justice system, but within society as a whole.

These egregious acts of violence and racial discrimination must be actively resisted. We call upon all WSU students to not be bystanders, but up-standers in the face of injustice. Share your voice from every platform and advocate through every channel. Together, we must continue to dismantle systems of oppression because a structural change is long overdue!

Allyship is imperative, your silence is not neutrality. We all have a collective responsibility to condemn racism and police brutality wherever we see it. So please speak up, recognize privilege, and get uncomfortable.

During these trying times, we want to remind everyone to be aware of your mental health and know that there are resources available for you.

Stay safe & be well,
