Dear campus community,
Dr. Kornbluh is a nationally respected professor, author and administrator whose extensive research spans U.S. history, oral history and academics in the age of the internet. Most recently, he served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky (UK) until 2020, a post he held for 11 years. He currently serves as a history professor at UK. Prior to that, he taught at Michigan State University from 1994 to 2009, rising from assistant professor to professor and department chair. Additionally, Dr. Kornbluh has held teaching positions at Washington University, Rice University and Oklahoma State University. He holds a B.A. in political science and history from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University. The provost search committee was chaired by Wayne State School of Medicine Distinguished Professor Jack Sobel and included a cross section of the campus community, including faculty, administration and the president of the Student Senate. They began their important work in September 2020 and, after a rigorous national search and interview process, they forwarded their top recommendations to me for consideration. I then selected Dr. Kornbluh as the best choice to hold the highest academic office at Wayne State. My warmest thanks go to Laurie Lauzon Clabo for her exceptional service as interim provost during a time of great need. Interim provost is not an easy role to fill, but Laurie served in the midst of a pandemic, guiding the university through truly uncharted waters. With wise and thoughtful guidance, she has provided incredible leadership, and our university is clearly better for it. She has my deepest gratitude, which I know is shared by the university community. She will resume her responsibilities as dean of the College of Nursing once Dr. Kornbluh begins his appointment. I also wish to thank the search committee for their dedication, insight and hard work, and I hope you will join me in giving a warm Warrior welcome to Dr. Kornbluh. I have tremendous confidence in his ability to help us advance our shared mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. It is my great pleasure to inform you that Mark L. Kornbluh, Ph.D., has been selected to serve as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, pending authorization at the next Board of Governors meeting on March 12, 2021.
