Join the Office of Faculty Affairs & Professional Development on Wednesday April 28th, 2021 from 12 p.m. -1 p.m. for a special virtual coffee hour:"Art as and Agent of Change and Healing"When: Wednesday, April 28, 2021 Time: 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. Guest Speakers: Sheryl Oring, M.F.A., Sheryl Oring’s work examines social issues through projects that incorporate old and new media to tell stories, examine public opinion and foster open exchange. She has typed thousands of postcards to the President since launching her “I Wish to Say” project in 2004. Her book, “Activating Democracy: The I Wish to Say Project,” was published by University of Chicago Press. In Fall 2020, she presented large-scale virtual versions of I Wish to Say with the University of Michigan and the Brooklyn Public Library. Oring’s work has been shown at Bryant Park in New York; the Berlin Wall Memorial; the Jewish Museum Berlin; the San Diego Museum of Art; as well as in major international festivals. Her work is in collections including the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art (NY) and the Tate in London and has been reviewed in publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, NPR’s All Things Considered and Der Spiegel. Oring is the recipient of grants from the Creative Capital, Franklin Furnace Fund, New York Foundation for the Arts, the North Carolina Arts Council, and the American Council on Germany. She has received public art commissions from airports in San Diego and Tampa and from the Office of Public Art in Pittsburgh. Oring is Professor and Chair of the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History at Wayne State University in Detroit.  Grace Serra, M.A., Grace Serra is the Art Curator at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, and has worked in the field of public art for over thirty years. She was Arts Coordinator for the Art in the Stations Public Arts Project for the Detroit People Mover, Detroit Receiving and Children’s Hospital Art Collection Programs; and served as editor for publications about these collections (Healing Works of Art, Detroit Receiving Hospital, 2007 and Art in the Stations, Detroit People Mover, 2003). As a leader in the field of Arts in Healthcare, for over fifteen years, she served on the Steering Committee for the Arts in Health Symposium at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 2016 and 2017, and chaired the International Arts in Health Conference Planning Committee in 2014. She was a featured speaker at the Alliance in Arts in Health Conference (Houston, TX) the Society for Arts in Health Conference (San Francisco, CA and Detroit, MI) and the Arts in Health Symposium at the Detroit Institute of Arts. For almost thirty years, Serra has taught courses in the visual arts, art history and arts administration and has served on faculty at Wayne State University, Eastern Michigan University and Henry Ford College. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wayne State University, Master of Arts from Dominican University, in Florence, Italy and Master of Arts (Arts Administration) from Eastern Michigan University.
