GME Resident & Core Faculty Surveys on New Innovations

The annual GME Resident and Core Faculty Surveys will be open in New Innovations starting Wednesday, Oct. 20, with a 2-week window for completion. Everyone will be sent an email shortly about how to access the evaluation once it’s available in NI. Faculty and resident responses provide us with crucial information on program quality and institutional support. They also supply GME and our programs with valuable data that’s used to put the ACGME survey responses into context. We’d like to achieve a 100% response rate. As an incentive, after we receive the first 20 responses, GME will randomly select 5 completers to receive a WSU School of Medicine T-shirt!

Fall 2021 Academic Boot Camp: Tuesday, Oct. 19, noon-3pm

The first Academic Boot Camp of 2021 will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19 from noon-3 pm. In addition, GME will conduct two, 1-hour supplemental research seminars on (1) power analysis and statistical significance and (2) regression. All events will be conducted by GME Director of Education Dr. Brent Stansfield. Both DART (for residents) and DEFT (for faculty) projects can lead to sustainable improvements to our programs' curricula and may also result in a conference presentation or publishable manuscript. GME has established the Svider Award in honor of the scholarly achievements, clinical excellence, and exceptional collegiality of Dr. Peter Svider, who passed away earlier this year. He completed a residency in Otolaryngology in 2018 and subsequently held a fellowship at Rutgers. The Svider Award will be given once annually to a graduating resident or fellow in any GME program in recognition of distinctive achievement in scholarly activities across the entire period of training. This award provides GME and program leadership with an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and commend a resident who has achieved a high level of scholarly productivity reflecting the ideals of graduate medical training. The deadline for applications is April 4, 2022.

WSUGME is now accepting Seed Grant applications for 2021-22. There are separate applications for Research projects and QI projects. The Resident Council met on Oct. 12 from 6:30-7:30 pm. President Danny Taheri (IM) addressed the upcoming year's agenda. The 2022 Professional Development Symposium addressing the topic of diversity, equity, and inclusion will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. RC meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 pm; the next will be held on Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. Contact Dr. Taheri if you would like to get involved!

Dermatology publications from residents, faculty, program alumni, with WSUSOM students

"A review of topical vitamin C derivatives and their efficacy,” an article co-authored by an M-4 student in the WSUSOM, Christina Enescu, Dermatology Associate Program Director Geoffrey Potts, and two alumnae of the Dermatology residency program, Lisa Bedford (2021) and Fatima Fahs (2020), has been published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. In addition, WSUSOM graduate Katherine Hoopes, Dermatology program alumna Reema Habra (2021), and faculty member Meena Moossavi co-authored "Analysis of inpatient dermatology consultations in a veterans' affairs hospital," which has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Mehdi Farshchian's review article on the "Occupational hazards of dermatology" has been accepted by SKINmed Journal. He co-authored this essay with Christina Enescu, former WSUSOM students Joshua Brady and Reem Kashlan, and Meena Moossavi. He also co-authored a response with current TY resident Monica Hessler and Jane Grant-Kels of UConn Health on "Reply to: The ethics of photo licensing," which appeared in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Kudos to all!    

IM residents win bronze award for poster presentation at AHA 2021 Scientific Sessions

A research poster by Internal Medicine residents on "Covid-19 vaccine associated acute myocarditis" has won the Early Career Clinical Case Competition Bronze award and will be presented at the 2021 American Heart Association's annual Scientific Sessions on Nov. 13-15. Co-authors include Mishita Goel, Aldin Jerome, Verisha Khanam, program alumna Raashi Chawla (2021), and faculty advisor Nishit Choksi. Also accepted for the 2021 AHA's Scientific Sessions was "Outcomes of ultrasound-assisted catheter directed thrombolysis compared to anticoagulation alone in patients with intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism: A meta-analysis," co-authored by Mishita Goel, University of South Dakota faculty Mansi Oberoi, Nishit Choksi, and Sarwan Kumar, the IM Program Director. Abstracts detailing their research will be published in Circulation. Well done!    

Jahanavi Ramakrishna (IM) has been accepted into the 2021-23 class of the Global and Urban Health Equity (GLUE) program, hosted by the WSUSOM's Global Health Alliance. In addition to physicians, GLUE scholars include medical students, graduate students, researchers, and healthcare professionals in a variety of disciplines. The program comprises didactic seminars, local advocacy participation, and a capstone project designed to equip cohort members with the knowledge and skills needed to join the mission of reducing health inequity domestically and abroad. Congratulations to Dr. Ramakrishna!  

IM resident Mishita Goel presents QI initiatives at ACC Quality Summit, publishes abstract in CHEST 2021

Mishita Goel was a co-author on two QI poster presentations at the ACC Quality Summit, held Sept-Oct 2021:  (1) “Cardiac Care Checklist”: An initiative to improve the screening of cardiovascular diseases in a resident internal medicine clinic,” with IM program alumna Ankita Aggarwal (2021) and current residents Warda Zaidi and Vrushank Patel, and (2) “Standardizing treatment of inpatient asymptomatic hypertension: A QI initiative,” with program alumnus FNU Sourabh and current residents Bernadette Schmidt, Aldin Jerome, and Trishya Reddy. Associate Program Director Vesna Tegeltija and Program Director Sarwan Kumar were the faculty advisors on these projects. In addition, with IM program alumni Tanaz Salimnia (2020) and Fred Bittner (2021) Dr. Goel had an abstract entitled "Young vs. Old: Menopause Cardiac Syndrome X" published in CHEST 2021. Congratulations!

Bernadette Schmidt (IM) publishes 3 abstracts

Bernadette Schmidt (IM chief resident) published 3 abstracts in CHEST over the summer: “A rare case of COVID-19 associated pulmonary aspergillosis,” with program alumna Victoria Gonzalez (2021), D. Fribourg, and M. Ehtesham; “ICU transition of care,” with Victoria Gonzalez, current resident Danny Taheri Abkouh and faculty advisors Zain Kulairi and Sarwan Kumar; and “Unusual presentation of classic Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,” with Victoria Gonzalez, current resident Trishya Reddy, faculty Muhammad Kashlan, and faculty advisor Zain Kulairi. Well done!    

Three of our Program Directors, Steven Daveluy (Dermatology), Jeff Hotaling (Otolaryngology), and Steven Lucas (Urology), were named as 2021 Top Docs by Detroit's HOUR magazine. Other GME faculty were named as Top Docs: Michael Cher (Chair, Urology), Ho-Sheng Lin (Chair, Otolaryngology), Maria Zestos (Chair, Anesthesiology), Richard Bryce (FM), and Michael Carron, Adam Folbe, Nathan Gonik, Cecilia Helwig, Mallory O'Niel, Bianca Siegel, and George Yoo (Otolaryngology faculty). Dr. Gonik received the most number of votes in the Oto-Pediatric category. The HOUR list is based on an online peer-review survey of physicians in the Detroit metropolitan area. Congratulations to all!

ACGME has developed a suite of on-demand well-being resources called AWARE, designed to promote well-being among residents and faculty. AWARE primarily focuses on individual strategies for cognitive skill-building and includes a video workshop, podcasts, and the ACGME AWARE app. Programs, institutions, and individuals can download these resources for integration into existing curricula or use in tandem with other efforts to mitigate the effects of stress and burnout and foster well-being among members of the GME community.

The Dermatology program recently held a wellness event. On Sept. 22, residents and faculty spent a few hours bowling at Garden Bowl in Detroit after they finished their didactics for the day. For a photo, click here. 

Every Friday at noon, GME will hold one-hour Zoom sessions about its plans for the JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) initiative sponsored by the AIAMC. This initiative is a collaboration with Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital in which residents and faculty will develop QI projects seeking meaningful and sustainable outcomes that will lead to a better understanding and improvement of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in their clinical learning environments. The next Karmanos Health Equity Book Club on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 4 pm will discuss Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine by Damon Tweedy, MD, who will attend this [virtual] event. Dr. Tweedy, a graduate from and associate professor of psychiatry at the Duke University School of Medicine and a staff physician at the Durham Veteran Affairs Health System, has published articles about race and medicine in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune, as well as in various medical journals.
