Jacinda Abdul-Mutakabbir earns Warrior of Distinction Award

The Wayne State University President’s Commission on the Status of Women honored Anti-Infective Research Lab Fellow graduate Jacinda Abdul-Mutakabbir with a Warrior of Distinction Award for her dedication to amplifying, researching and overcoming health disparities among minoritized communities. 


Sidney Barthwell Sr. '29: A legend of Black pharmacy entrepreneurship

Sidney Barthwell Sr. earned his B.S. in Pharmacy from Wayne State in 1929 and founded what was once the largest Black-owned chain of drugstores in the United States. The ambitious Barthwell opened his first pharmacy at the height of the Great Depression in 1933 and provided much-needed work for many Black Detroit residents ­­– a long-term focus of his socially conscious career.


Peter Frade retires after 25 years at WSU Applebaum

Dr. Peter Frade '68, '71, '78 is a Wayne State Warrior through and through. A three-time alumnus with a quarter-century of professional service to the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Dr. Frade is well known across campus for his optimism, enthusiasm, kindness and compassion. He retired on January 15, 2022, leaving a meaningful legacy and having achieved the title professor emeritus.


Katherine Bechard '18 reflects on COVID care

"Our training to work as part of a collaborative environment within all specialties made physician assistants a critical and respected part of the pandemic effort," writes physician assistant studies alumna Katherine Bechard '18 in this reflective essay. "We formed a team bonded by this extreme environment, and most were willing to help however they could. We came together as a community, with no job too big or too small."


PT grad delivers Commencement address

Wayne State graduates, family members, faculty, staff and friends were beaming under their masks on Dec. 14, 2021, during the first in-person Commencement in two years, celebrated at the Fox Theatre while observing the university's pandemic safety guidelines. WSU Applebaum's own Doctor of Physical Therapy graduate Bana Odeh '21, introduced in the video below, delivered the student address.
