Members of the campus community, Peter McPherson, president of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities — of which Wayne State University is a member — recently published this letter condemning the Russian invasion of the sovereign state of Ukraine, ordered by Vladimir Putin. We stand in solidarity with this letter, the worldwide university community, and free people everywhere, especially the citizens of Ukraine. Our campus community includes many students, staff and faculty of Ukrainian ancestry, as does our wider metro Detroit community. The stories and images we have seen and heard following this naked military aggression are shocking, as though they are from a darker era in our history. But they are real, as are the people who are suffering under this onslaught. News like this understandably takes a toll on our mental health. Students who feel distressed and need to speak to someone should reach out to CAPS at 313-577-3398 or caps@wayne.edu. Faculty and staff have access to free, confidential, round-the-clock support through the Employee Assistance Program at 800-448-8326. As we mourn these acts of violence, we invite the entire campus community to participate in a peace vigil this Thursday, March 3, at 5 p.m. on Gullen Mall. Additional details to come soon. Please keep the people of Ukraine and Ukrainian ancestry in your thoughts.
