Chief Health and Wellness Officer - Wayne State University

Dear campus community:

As we move into spring and summer semesters, it’s a good time for all of us to review campus health and safety protocols.

Unfortunately, the incidence of coronavirus infections in the state, city and on campus has risen in the past few weeks. The good news is that the majority of predictive models suggest that we will likely peak this week and can expect a decrease in the number of cases over the next several weeks and beyond. All of this is a reminder that COVID is still around, and it is not time to let our guard down. We are much better equipped to deal with this threat now than we have been at any time during the pandemic, but only if we continue to remain vigilant and comply with certain campus protocols.

Here are a few quick reminders:

  • Please continue to complete the Campus Daily Screener each day that you are going to be on campus and any time that you have symptoms or a known exposure, or recent travel, even if you are not going to be physically present on campus. If your screener is red, you will receive a call from the screeners at the Campus Health Center. Please follow their direction.
  • It’s still vitally important to get boosted. Those not current with boosters will see their screeners turn red until they are compliant.
  • Those with an approved waiver of the vaccine mandate must be tested weekly at the Campus Health Center (313-577-5041).
  • Faculty and staff are free to ask anyone to see their screener at any time.
  • For now, we will continue to electronically scan screeners at high volume locations on campus.
  • Masks continue to be required in all classes and labs for spring/summer and are optional in other indoor spaces on campus. Masks are encouraged when in crowded indoor settings.

These continuing health protocols are, as always, subject to change depending on the course the virus and its variants take over the next weeks and months. If we experience another surge, which we regard as unlikely at this point, we will tighten our protocols accordingly. If, on the other hand, things improve markedly, we will ease existing restrictions.

It’s a testament to the resilience and fortitude of Wayne State students, faculty and staff that we have begun to emerge from more than two years of the pandemic with our inherent spirit intact and thriving. Let’s continue to work to ensure the safest and healthiest campus environment possible.

Sincerely,

Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo
