Wayne State University

Dear colleagues,

As citizens of a democracy, all Americans have an opportunity to help shape our government and our future by voting in elections. In recognition of our solemn civic duty to vote, Wayne State University will offer a holiday for employees this upcoming Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, to ensure that every person has the chance to cast their ballot and make their voice heard in local, state and national elections. Please make sure you're registered to vote and make a plan to get to the polls. Do your part for our country and exercise your right to vote.

We also made the decision to declare a holiday in recognition of Juneteenth next year, which occurs on Monday, June 19, 2023. Juneteenth, dubbed America’s second Independence Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. I encourage you to take advantage of this time off to learn about our nation’s fraught history for African Americans and reflect on the meaning of our hard-fought freedom.

No classes have been scheduled on these holidays. For employees who may be required to work on campus these days, supervisors should allow alternate days to be used as their holidays.

Regards,

M. Roy Wilson
