Dear Warrior community, Like many of you, I watched events unfold at Michigan State University last night, and once again I am heartbroken at such senseless violence and tragedy. I have reached out to my colleague, Interim President Teresa Woodruff, to let her know that I and all of us at Wayne State carry them in our thoughts, especially the student victims and their families. Our police department has stepped up its presence and visibility on campus, but this, too, is tragic. Universities should be places of discovery, not places of fear. We are all affected in some way by these events, even more so because this occurred at a partner institution, where many of us have friends, family and colleagues. Michigan State is right up the road. We share a similar mission. Some of our students have attended Michigan State, and former Wayne State Warriors are now Spartans. I asked our crisis team to gather this morning to discuss our own preparedness and how we might support our students and campus in the wake of last night’s incident. For now, we are continuing operations, but our Counseling and Psychological Services team is ready to serve any students who need support, and the Employee Assistance Program is available for any employees seeking help. As terrible as it is to contemplate, we must also be prepared, and I encourage you to review our active shooter preparedness materials. Most importantly, please remember that life is precious. Care for one another, and support one another as we mourn those who have passed and pray for those who need healing. Sincerely, M. Roy Wilson |
